Top Turkey Trotters earn fire truck rides home

Sequim Elementary PTA honored its top Turkey Trot earners last week with fire truck rides home courtesy of Clallam County Fire District 3.

Students raised more than $31,000 of its $28,000 goal to support The Six Books for Summer Reading program at Helen Haller Elementary (HHE), the last day of school book give-away at Greywolf Elementary (GWE), special funding requests from teachers, and more. Students at the schools finished laps either inside Greywolf’s gymnasium or at Sequim School District’s track on Nov. 27.

Third grader Sammy Nicholson at HHE raised the most funds ($871), followed by GWE kindergartener Kacy Batson ($705). Donations came from family and friends in 34 states, PTA organizers said.

“We are so proud of every student that participated as they ran, jogged, walked and trotted,” organizers said via email.

At HHE, the boy and girl with the most laps in each class received a special obstacle course reward with physical education teacher Joclin Julmist.
