A re-dedication of a Sequim World War I plaque is scheduled for 1 p.m.Friday, Nov. 1, at 481 Carlsborg Road — the Carlsborg Family Church.
The original plaque was taken off the stone. The Rhodefer family took it upon themselves to replace the plaque and arrange a ceremony to let the community know it is there and honor the Clallam County men who fought in the war.
There are 10 names on the plaque and one is Jack Grennan, for whom the American Legion Post in Sequim is named.
All are welcome to come out to the ceremony and enjoy a reception afterwards with stories of each of the men in a display.
Wreaths across our peninsula
The Michael Trebert Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is looking forward to Wreaths Across America’s fifth year on the Olympic Peninsula. This event is focused on “Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve and Teach the next generation the value of freedom.”
There is still a need for wreaths to be purchased so each veteran has a wreath in the many cemeteries the DAR is sponsoring: Sequim View; Dungeness; Zaccardo; Mount Angeles; Forks; Gardiner; Blue Mountain; St. Luke’s, and several veteran monuments.
The Michael Trebert DAR Chapter group sponsorship of “3 wreaths for 2” is again being utilized online only. Please go to wreathsacrossamerica.org/WA0153 to sponsor veteran remembrance wreaths. There will be a patriotic ceremony at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Mt. Angeles Memorial Park (45 Monroe Road, Port Angeles), after which all present can place wreaths on veterans graves.
Contact me if you have questions about times for wreath layings at any of the cemeteries: cdrlgilchrist@gmail.com or mtcwreaths@gmail.com.
For the children
Santa’s Castle’s their mission for 30 years has been to ease holiday stress by providing new toys, board games and books to military families in the Pacific Northwest who are experiencing financial hardships. They are a 501(c)3 nonprofit; you can check them out online at jblmsantascastle.org.
The Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America is collecting sports balls for them to give out: football, basketball, soccer and playground balls. You can send them to me — at 538 N. Seventh Ave., Sequim WA 98382 — or drop by my front porch. Deflated balls are easier to transport.
