The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is starting a new chapter in Sequim.
The NSDAR is in service to God, Home and Country. The three pillars of service are Historical Preservation, Patriotism and Education. If you are interested in genealogy, supporting veterans, educating the next generation about history and the constitution, or making sure the past is not forgotten, the DAR may be for you! The organizing regent, Anita, can be reached at ajreynoldsdar@gmail.com and would be glad to talk to you and answer questions.
The Clallam County Veterans Association conducts a Bell Ringing Ceremony the last Friday of every month at 1 p.m. at Veterans Park next to the county courthouse. This ceremony recognizes the service of veterans who have passed away the month before. All are welcome to attend to show honor and respect to the veterans and their families. There is a flag line, a piper, the Marine Corps League Rifle Honor Squad and Echo Taps.
Be an associate member
The Marine Corps League Mount Olympus Detachment 897 accepts all veterans as associate members to augment the regular members of Marines and FMF Corpsmen and Chaplains. These associate members can be members of the Rifle Honor Squad, help with Toys For Tots, participate in parades and be in the booth at the Clallam County Fair.
There are two meetings and a social event each quarter. Meetings are held at the Veterans Center in Port Angeles.
The Mount Olympus Detachment is a member of the Clallam County Veterans Association, assists Marine veterans in need, supports Port Angeles High School NJROTC with scholarships, donates to veteran organizations and the Honor Squad is at veterans’ funerals and other events.
If you would like to get in touch with the detachment please email me at cdrlgilchrist@gmail.com. I am an associate member.
Spring cleaning
It is time for Spring cleaning! While you are doing this please set aside antiques, collectibles, knickknacks, framed art, small furniture and holiday decor to donate to The Attic, a secondhand store that is part of Sarge’s Veteran Support. Sales from the store go to the 501 (c)(3) to support the resident veterans in the shelter, Hobucket House, Camp Sol Duc, Minsky Place and The Outpost.
The Attic is in Forks but all you need to do is email me at cdrlgilchrist@gmail.com and I can pick up your donation and get it out there. If you aren’t sure just email me a photo and I can let you know if we can take it. No clothes or large furniture. If you are out on the West End, please drop by The Attic at 110 Spartan Ave.
You can also purchase items online through Etsy. You can find more information on this veteran housing mission at sargesveteransupport.org. Thank you for your support of homeless and disabled veterans in need.
A taxing time
It is tax time. Please be aware! The IRS notes that it does not leave urgent or threatening messages on your phone or voicemail. Scammers will often threaten victims with arrest, deportation or revocation of a driver’s license. It is possible to “spoof” caller ID numbers. The scammer may attempt to spoof the caller ID number of a sheriff’s office, department of motor vehicles or federal agency.
The IRS emphasizes that it will never call and demand payment through a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer, or ask for a credit or debit card over the phone. If you receive a threatening call, hang up the phone. You can report the caller ID and callback number on phishing@IRS.gov. You also may report the call on FTC.gov and note “IRS Telephone Scam” on your report.
If in doubt, ask someone! Do not give your personal information to anyone who calls you. This also applies to unsolicited texts and emails. If you have questions, research the correct agency phone number and call them. Don’t use a number you are given on a call. Take a moment, think it through, ask for help.
