Appreciation Day

American Legion Post 62 and Home Depot Sequim host a Veterans Appreciation Day starting at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Aug. 12, in the parking lot of the store at 1145 W. Washington St.

All veterans are welcome to come by and talk with veterans organizations. There will be service officers available to answer questions regarding veterans benefits for medical care, service connected disability, pension, and aid and attendance.

You can take a chance on the raffle of gift cards and have a hot dog, chips and cake. The grand prize is a 50-inch flat screen smart TV!

The opening ceremony is at 10 a.m. and the event closes at 2 p.m. All monies raised will go to support veterans in Clallam County. Hope to see you there!

Passes for veterans

A Lifetime Disabled Veteran Pass is offered to Washington state residents who are veterans with a 30 percent or greater service-connected disability rating. This pass gives free entry to state parks, free boat launch, free trailer dump, no reservation fee and free nightly camping or moorage.

It does not take the place of the Discover Pass and is not accepted on lands managed by Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) or Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Go to passes@parks.wa.gov to download the application and rules of use. You can also call 360-902-8844 to get an application mailed to you. This is a great way to keep enjoying the outdoors at minimal cost.

Warm clothing needs

The Clothing Closet at the Veterans Center, 216 S. Francis St., Port Angeles, is looking ahead to winter and starting to gather warm, washable coats sizes large and X-large and waterproof boots sizes 10-12. These can be new or like-new.

We appreciate your generosity, but please remember we do not take dress clothes, dirty or stained items. The focus is on jeans, sweats, heavy coats, waterproof boots, gloves and new socks to supply to the veterans in need. We also take washable blankets, bath towels and sheet sets in like new condition. Please focus on what we know the veterans need and use.

Pantry particulars

Sarge’s Place Shelter needs food and coffee for their pantry. They are very low on supplies. Folks can deliver it to their address or have it shipped to: 250 Ash Avenue, Forks, WA 98331.

If you would rather mail a check, send it to the same address. They need a variety of chunky soups, cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, canned green beans and corn, chili, corned beef hash and coffee. Thank you so much for your support of the shelter.
