Veterans Corner: State program creates inspired, educated ‘citizens’

Toys For Tots is still collecting funds to purchase toys for the children of Clallam County. If you would like to donate, please send a check made out to “Marine Toys For Tots “and mail to: MCL Det 897, PO Box 3281, Sequim, WA 98382.

We appreciate your support in helping us make Christmas special for the children in spite of all the other issues going on in the world. Christmas is for kids!

Exchange on the hook

The U.S. Coast Guard Exchange at the Air Station on Ediz Hook Road in Port Angeles is open to all dependents, retirees and qualifying veterans from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Fridays, 9:30 a.m.-3p.m. on Saturdays. If you have any questions, call the exchange at 360-457-8600.

State boys program open

The American Legion Evergreen Boys State (EBS) is now enrolling male junior and senior high school students for the 2021 program set to take place June 20-26 at Warm Beach Conference Center in Stanwood.

EBS aims to simulate and emulate Washington state government through a fun and engaging program. Attendees, called citizens, will have the opportunity to construct local, county and state governments. Activities include running for office, court proceedings, creating and enforcing laws, pizza parties, a talent show, celebrations and recreational programs.

Citizens hone public speaking skills, experience how government works, get inspired by guest speakers, have fun and make new friends for life.

Check the program out online at evergreenboysstate.org and email to office@EvergreenBoysState.org to apply and get questions answered.

Growlers on the way

Be advised there will be a flyover of four Navy “Growler” jets at 9:02 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, over the Sequim View Cemetery, headed from west to east at 1,000 feet and going 300 knots. This will cause some noise in the surrounding area, but only for a few minutes.

This event is a tribute to honor the veterans and is part of the Wreaths Across America ceremony. It coincides with more than 2,500 ceremonies across the United States and abroad.

Arlington National Cemetery was the first to have the ceremony in 1992. The mission is to “Remember, Honor, Teach.” The Michael Trebert Chapter NSDAR is the sponsor of the Sequim event.

You can view our local ceremony at www.facebook.com/nwvrc. I am the Master of Ceremonies and I personally invite you to watch. If you want to attend in person, because of COVID restrictions, you must sign up online at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/WA0153.

Happy 75th!

Congratulations to Sequim VFW Henry Echternkamp Post 4760 on their 75th anniversary on Nov. 11. To learn more about the post, email the post commander at secretary@vfwpost4760.com. Happy Anniversary!

Community shares at Sarge’s

Sarge’s Place in Forks had a delicious Thanksgiving dinner thanks to a donation. Thank you all for your generosity to the veterans during the holiday season.

They are continuing to provide help and services to veterans in need. You can shop in their online store at www.etsy.com/shop/TheAtticInForks. All proceeds go to support the veterans.

They also have a “Wish List” of big ticket items I can email to you; contact me at cdrlgilchrist@gmai.com.

The needs continue, just as in any family.
