YMCA gears up for summer with programs for all ages

The YMCA of Sequim has a summer’s worth of programming in 2024, for children, teens and adults alike.

Summer Day Camp is for youths of ages 6-12, and runs 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the YMCA of Sequim, 610 N. Fifth Ave., for four weeks: June 24-28, July 8-12, July 22-26 and Aug. 5-9.

The camp features a fun, different theme for kids each week as they make friends and enjoy new adventures.

Now in its third year, the YMCA’s Find Your Trail outdoor leadership program takes youths of ages 12-17 on local hikes, where they will learn about geology, geography and marine environments on the Olympic Peninsula. Participants learn hiking essentials, wayfinding and wilderness first aid. Weekly hikes start July 9 and run through Aug. 22. All hikes are led by YMCA staffers who will introduce kids to local resources while teaching them outdoor leadership skills. Financial assistance is available for any child that wants to attend and needs a little extra help.

“This is a unique program where teens get outdoors, meet other kids, and explore some of the best hiking and walking trails on the Olympic Peninsula,” said Erin Hawkins, Olympic Peninsula YMCA’s marketing and communications manager.

The YMCA is also introducing new summer programming this year for adults with the hopes of creating community through a series of group outdoor excursions. These excursions include several hike, run and paddle sessions at some of the most popular destinations on the Olympic Peninsula.

This month, there will be a group paddle board session at Lake Leland on June 20, a group hike at the Dungeness Spit on June 25, and a group run on the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT) in Port Angeles at Morse Creek.

“These excursions are great for adults or seniors who love outdoor activities but don’t want to go alone,” said Tracey Durso, YMCA’s program executive of healthy living.

“We love being able to take people outside not only to get a great workout but to establish a sense of community outside the gym,” Durso said.

More outdoor excursions for adults are offered in July and include: a group run at Carrie Blake Community Park on July 10; a group paddle at Gibbs Lake on July 18, and a group hike at Hurricane Hill on July 30.

In August, the activities include: a group paddle at Lake Sutherland on Aug. 21; a group hike at Slab Camp at Aug. 27, and group run on the ODT at Jamestown S’Klallam Center in Blyn.
