Where water is wealth, indeed.
The rain held off just long enough for the Sequim Irrigation Festival to finish its Grand Parade on Saturday and organizers remain generally pleased with the results of the 121st festival “Looking to the Future Through the Past” that spanned May 6-15.
Deon Kapetan, who just finished her sixth year as executive director, said the parade on May 14 was one of the fastest ever with the least amount of gaps.
“How cool is it that the rain held off until after the parade?” Kapetan said.
“Joe Irvin (parade director/Rotary Club of Sequim president) did a fantastic job and the parade marshals did a good job of keeping down gaps.”
The parade featured 120 entries who walked/drove/rode from Brown Road to JCPenney’s with thousands of locals and visitors cheering them on.
However, due to the rain, the car show portion of the Hot Rods & Harleys Show n’ Cruz at Walmart ended early and Elvis did not perform. Awards were announced on the show’s Facebook page.
Randy Perry, car show director, said they still had 190 entries with 15 more cars than last year despite the weather.
“Overall, it was a great turnout,” he said.
The carnival on Fir Street continued on through Sunday but it did shut down early on Saturday.
Kapetan said she’s waiting to hear back from the carnival to see how well attended it was over the weekend.
David Blakeslee, co-director of the 28th Logging Show, said their multiple events — including axe throwing, truck and tractor puling and the Strongman competition — went well until the rain hit about 3 p.m. Saturday.
The tractor pull’s track became too slick to use, he said, but they had more vendors than ever, music was well-received and they had no incidents aside from an accidental truck fire.
Blakeslee said after the rain began the crowd dispersed but beer vendors became popular with their tents making for good cover and a T-shirt dealer’s sweatshirt sales went up, too.
Overall, there were minimal incidents throughout the festival, Kapetan said, such as candy being thrown on the parade route, which isn’t allowed, and a car wreck delaying some parade entrants from arriving early.
Each year, festival event directors choose an event and/or item that needs to be reviewed and this year it was the website and arts and crafts fair.
“I think we have our eye on a couple of events we’d like to make bigger,” she said.
“We take notes on what works and doesn’t work and make it a little bit better every year.”
Last year, the festival won Evening Magazine’s “Best Small Town Celebration” contest and Kapetan said they saw some impact from that.
“We definitely had more out-of-towners this year,” she said. “People were really checking out the website and we were getting a lot of feedback like when we referenced people to the Logging Show at the Blake property. They want an address to put it in their GPS.”
Planning for the festival goes year-round and is volunteer-run with hundreds of individuals and community groups participating.
“We’re always looking for more volunteers,” Kapetan said.

The festival’s final event, Sequim High School’s “Cinderella” operetta wraps up this weekend with shows at 7 p.m. May 19-21.
