The fish definitely were biting at the 13th annual Kid Fishing Day by the Puget Sound Anglers’ North Olympic Peninsula Chapter.
Club president Bob Keck said at least 300 children participated and that nearly everyone caught at least their two-fish limit at the City of Sequim’s water reclamation pond and demonstration park.
“Someone’s bobber would go up and down for 20-30 seconds before someone would get a bite,” Keck said.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the City of Sequim Public Works stocked the pond with about 1,500 trout with about 300 of those between 4-5 pounds, Keck said. Thirty volunteers set up 100 ready-to-fish rods and hooks, the hot dog stand, cleaning station and helped around the pond and toddler pond.
Over the course of the summer, the club plans to plant another 1,200-1,500 fish. Children 14 and under can catch up to two fish per day. The pond can be fished on through the summer but club members suggest not fishing during the RC Aquanauts’ sailing sessions 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The purpose of the event, Keck said, is to promote fishing for children and families in the community. The Anglers meet the third Thursday of each month at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.
