An engagement in Seahawk blue

Nov. 19 proposal comes at Sequim Sea Hawkers club meeting

From hanging out with the 12th Man to looking for a best man, Greg Roberts and Amber Hansen sure had an interesting evening with their fellow Sea Hawkers.

Roberts surprised Hansen, his girlfriend, with a proposal at the Nov. 19 meeting of the Dungeness Bay Sea Hawkers, held at the Bell Creek Bar & Grill.

“Oh my gosh — I had no idea,” Hansen said. “To me, it seems perfect.”

Roberts, a retiree who is the media/communications officer for the Sea Hawkers group, said he and Hansen, a caregiver at Sherwood Assisted Living, have been together for about seven months.

“She’s a sweet, beautiful girl (and) means everything to me,” Roberts said.

Roberts invited Hansen’s parents to attend the meeting.

“I thought, ‘Why (would) my parents want to go to that?’ What a thing to invite them to,” Hansen said.

At each meeting, club officials hand out 12 prizes to attendees. Roberts’ plan was to present Hansen with a proposal with the 12th gift. Her name actually came up earlier in the draw so Roberts had to tuck it away until the end.

At gift No. 12, Roberts went down on a knee and presented the ring.

“She stood and just stared at it (and said), ‘These aren’t Seahawk colors!’” Roberts recalled. “It all worked out good.”

The wedding is set for March 5 at Sequim Community Church.
