Slavik in spotlight at Peninsula College presentation

Barbara Slavik — artist, longtime education director for the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center and former Peninsula College art instructor — presents a lecture focused on her show “Organicism,” now on display in the PC PUB Gallery of Art, during her Studium Generale presentation in the Little Theater at 12:35 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20. Slavik earned her master’s degree in painting from San Diego State University and taught various art classes at Western Washington University, San Diego Mesa College, San Diego State University, Palomar College and PC. She was selected by the Washington State Arts Commission for an Artist in Residence Grant for her work in the Crescent School District. The event is free and open to the public. SHS choir concert set

Sequim High School hosts a choir concert, set for 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the SHS auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave. Because of several conflicts with sporting events, the date was changed from Oct. 27 to one day prior. Call 582-3600.

Art group sets presentation

The Olympic Peninsula Art Association presents “New Golden Lecture: Mixed Media” by Barbara De Pirro at its October meeting, set for 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in the downstairs atrium at the Landing Mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave., Port Angeles. The lecture is for people of all levels and backgrounds, including painters, mixed media, fiber and sculptural artists. The presentation covers a wide variety of techniques for use in a wide range of media. Learn about Golden acrylic paints and mediums, including QoR watercolors. Attendees receive information packets and free samples. OTA to host ‘Phantom Frolics’

Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim, hosts a Haunted Theatre attraction open to the public from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 Presented by the OTA Children’s Theatre Troupe, teams of little “ghost hosts” will be conducting guided tours of the “haunted” theater building, followed by trick-or-treating, games and ghoulish concessions. Admission is $5 at the door; proceeds benefit the OTA Children’s Theatre program offering classes and workshops throughout the year. See olympictheatrearts.org.

Sequim City Band hosts free ‘Viva Italia!’ concert

The Sequim City Band and special guests present music highlighting Italy at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Port Angeles Performing Arts Center, 304 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles. Tickets on sale for PC play

Tickets are now on sale for “The Sea Is a Restless Whore,” Peninsula College’s fall drama production, slated for performances at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, Nov. 9, 10, 16 and 17, at the Metta Room, 132 E. Front St., in Port Angeles. The play, written by Brian Boone and directed by Dr. Lara Starcevich, is about five pirates aboard a ship, each harboring a dirty little secret. The Port Angeles Symphony is accepting applications for its 2017 Young Artist Competition and Junior Young Artist Competition. The competitions are open to any North Olympic Peninsula instrumentalists. Download an application at www.portangelessymphony.org/education/youngArtists.html. The registration deadline is Dec. 1 and the competitions are Jan. 21, 2017. Prizes will be awarded.

Adventurer speaks at libraries

Local sea kayaker, author and adventurer Chris Duff will visit the Sequim Library and Port Angeles Library this October to discuss his experiences and share exciting stories from his life traveling the world’s oceans in small boats. Duff’s free presentations, “Travels by Paddle,” will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.; and at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., and are part of the ongoing Clallam County Reads program taking place at the North Olympic Library System throughout October.

Navy brass performs

Navy Band Northwest’s Low Brass Quartet will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. This performance will be during the library’s quarterly Art Blast — a free reception celebrating the opening of the spring Art in the Library show. Refreshments will be served and limited library services will be available during this after-hours event.

Local poets to share insights

On Oct. 28, Writers on the Spit will host the Fourth Friday Readings at The Lodge, 660 Evergreen Farm Way in Sequim with featured poets Dianne Knox of Sequim and Jane Evans of Port Townsend. The readings begin at 6:30 p.m. but arrive by 6 p.m. to purchase something at the Espresso Bistro when you enter the Lodge. The event itself is free. An hour of 5-minute open mic readings will follow the two speakers. Interested writers should come early to submit their names.

Musicale hosts benefit concert

Monday Musicale will have a scholarship benefit concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E. Lopez Ave., Port Angeles. The cost is $15 at the door and all proceeds are to benefit Monday Musicale’s Scholarship Fund. The concert features Gary McRoberts on piano; Anna Nichols on organ; and singer Robin Reed. Also featured are Allyson (piano), Carlin, (violin) and and Rachel (cello) Kramer plus the duo of Jim and Sharla Jo Lind.
