Bear with him

Thomas wins Black Bear Diner raffle as more than $1,300 worth of tickets sold

Sequim resident Art Thomas was surprised when he got a call informing him he had won the carved bear being raffled off at the Black Bear Diner.

The 5-foot tall, nearly 400-pound carving was created in mid-June during the “Chainsaw For Change” carving tour by woodcarver Ray Schulz.

All proceeds raised at the carving were donated to the Captain Joseph House Foundation in Port Angeles. Each raffle ticket cost $5, and by the time the drawing was held on July 22, more than $1,300 was raised. Thomas only bought one ticket, but chance paid off.
