Phyllis Bernard took her oath office on May 1 in Carlsborg to become the newest Clallam County Public Utility District commissioner.
She was appointed by current commissioners Ken Hays and John Purvis in April to fill Jim Waddell’s seat, who had served the PUD since 2019 and died on Feb. 5 of pancreatic cancer.
Bernard started a few days in commissioner district No. 3 prior to General Election filing week May 6-10 as the seats held by Waddell and Purvis (district No. 2) are up to a vote this year.
Both Purvis and Bernard filed on Monday, but finalized candidates for the PUD commissioner district seats were not available by press time.
Bernard has served as an at-large commissioner for the Olympic Medical Center board since July 2023, and previously served on the board of directors of Southwest Power Pool Inc. of Little Rock, Ark., a nonprofit regional transmission organization, from 2003-2019.
