For its second month since returning from a summer hiatus, Music Live with Lunch returns at noon, Tuesday, Oct. 18, with renown saxophonist Craig Buhler and Gary McRoberts accompanying him on piano.
The duo will play classics in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church’s sanctuary, 500 N. Fifth Ave., from the “American Songbook” and pieces moved by the Spirit for 30 minutes.
An Octoberfest lunch follows music with beer-basted brats, German potato salad, cabbage slaw and an apple crisp.
Buhler is known for his work directing the 17-piece Stardust Band locally and he directs the annual Big Band workshop in Carmel, Calif.
For 20 years, he’s instructed clarinet, saxophone, flute, ear training and improvisation.
Buhler also is a charter member of the rock band Honk and he’s recorded and performed with numerous jazz and rocks combos producing multiple CDs.
Over his tenure, he’s served as worship director for many churches and his newest endeavor is as director of the Kingsway Christian Music Camp, which opens next summer as a forum integrating and instructing various music types as a culmination of worship.
McRoberts began his study of piano at age 4 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts in piano performance and his Master of Arts and Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting.
His 40-year career as choral conductor included the first jazz choir to be invited to sing at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. He currently performs with the Deka Piano Trio and other ensembles which allow him to return to his roots as a performing pianist.
McRoberts is the associate music director at Kingsway Christian Music Camp.
Music Live with Lunch was founded more than 25 years ago at St. Luke’s by Lou and Bill Yandell as a music outreach to the community with 30-minute shows at noon each third Tuesday of the month from September-May.
Tickets this year are $12 for the concert and lunch with season tickets still available for $80. Purchase tickets from the church office from 9 a.m.-noon Monday-Thursday or at the door. For more information, call 683-4862.
