She is an horticulture consultant, garden writer and instructor who has worked for the Washington Park Arboretum and the Holden Arboretum in Ohio. Her education is in urban horticulture; her degrees are from Michigan State University and the University of Washington. She is an ISA certified arborist and a member of the Washington Park Arboretum editorial board.

Topics included environmentally sensitive site planning and practices for land development, which Lyckman used to create a new process for Estes Builders.
