Tim Ford, of Olympia, hopes to oust Judge J. Robin Hunt from her position in the state Appellate Court presiding over District 2, which includes Clallam County.
Ford, who serves as assistant attorney general for government accountability under Attorney General Rob McKenna, is running on a platform encouraging open government.
"Open and transparent government, where decisions and debate occur in public, strengthens the citizens’ faith in our system," Ford said. "Government at every level, including the courts, must be held accountable to the public it serves."
Ford served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and was a helicopter pilot prior to attending Gonzaga University School of Law. He and his wife, Sonya, have one daughter.
Hunt took her seat on the Washington State Court of Appeals in 1997. She graduated from Wayne State University Law School, cum laude, and started private practice in Fairbanks, Alaska. From 1975-1983, she served as a deputy/senior deputy with the King County Prosecutor’s Office.
Since becoming an appellate judge, Hunt has arranged to hold court in local schools to promote a greater understanding of the court’s function by students and the general public. A 32-year resident of Kitsap County, Hunt is married and has two grown sons.
The District 2 division of the state Appeals Court serves Thurston, Mason, Kitsap, Jefferson, Clallam and Grays Harbor counties. An appellant judge presides over challenges to decisions made or actions taken by lower courts, such as the Clallam County Superior Court.
The judge’s decision regarding the appealed case can send the defendant back to trial because of a legal error or affirm the decision made by the lower court. The judge position is nonpartisan and voters will be able to choose between the candidates in this fall’s election.
