Cascadia Subduction Zone is next topic for Sequim’s Science Café

Ken Austin, the UNAVCO Northwest Region engineer/project manager for the Earthscope Plate Boundary Observatory, is the next featured speaker at the next Sequim Science Café.

Ken Austin, the UNAVCO Northwest Region engineer/project manager for the Earthscope Plate Boundary Observatory, is the next featured speaker at the next Sequim Science Café.

Austin presents “Observing and Monitoring the Cascadia Subduction Zone” at the Science Café, presented by the Sequim Education Foundation and set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Paradise Restaurant, 703 N. Sequim Ave.

Austin will give an overview of the Plate Boundary Observatory, what it is and how it has evolved since it was installed. He will show some of the current observations of deformation along the boundary and likely have a discussion on how this fits in with the article that came out in the New Yorker this summer.

Austin is the project manager for the Northwest and now the Alaska regions for the Plate Boundary Observatory. He has been with UNAVCO for 10 years working on this and other projects. A Poulsbo native and graduate of North Kitsap High School, he has degrees in geology/geophysics from Central Washington University.

The Science Café is a community service of the Sequim Education Foundation. Programs present expert speakers for adult and young adult audiences interested in current developments in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Science Café events are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Paradise Restaurant. Admission is free and food and beverages are available for purchase.

The Dec. 8 Science Café is “Biochar: Production and Applications” with engineer and entrepreneur Francesco Tortorici of Jofran Enterprises in Port Townsend.
