HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The first Cougar Shout-Out breakfast was held Nov. 13 to honor students who received a Cougar Shout-Out. A Shout-Out is a way for teachers to honor students who consistently exemplify the characteristics of respect, responsibility and safety.
Students got to invite their favorite adult to have breakfast in the multi-purpose room. During this time, Russ Lodge individually recognized each student by reading the wonderful words their teachers wrote about them. More than 125 attendees were served and 62 students were honored. There will be another breakfast planned for this school year and we hope to see you there!
Tami Wall’s third-graders have much to say about the joyful parts of their school day:
In third grade I enjoy science because I get to learn about space and that Pluto is the farthest planet from the sun and some people think that Pluto exploded but it didn’t explode. It just broke into little pieces! Miguel Najera
In third grade I enjoy track because it replaces the morning recess. It’s good exercise because it keeps the heart going and its fun! Track is so much fun and a great way to make new friends while exercising! We use the Middle School track which is really big. We also record our laps so we can know how many we have gone the whole year! Ericka Dickinson
In third grade I enjoy the school learning websites because they will help you progress in reading and math. The website I like the most is Raz-Kids which is a reading website. Another is called IXL which is a math website. Dylan Allen
In third grade, my favorite subject is spelling because it helps with reading and writing. And it can help with a lot of other things too. Also it is really fun. We have spelling bees and a spelling test each Friday. Fayth Lymangrover
I enjoy third grade because I can do Raz-Kids. Raz-Kids is a computer program for reading and then you can build things and buy things with the points you earn. Andrew Johnson
I like music because we get to do warm ups. We sing songs and do tongue twisters which are sometimes too easy. We also sang in the Veterans Day assembly. That’s why I like music. Mason Eveland
I enjoy reading with a group because I get information. After I am done reading, I can take a quiz on it. I also enjoy it because if I am doing a report, I know some things on it. That is what I mostly like about third grade. Kimberly Flores
I enjoy recess because we get a break from learning and I can talk and hang out with all my good friends like Kylie. She is in my class. (She is writing about snack time.) Recess is also fun because there is a dome made of climbing bars. That is where Kylie and I usually play. In second grade we had three recesses but in third grade we only have two. (That’s why Ms. Wall takes us to track) I hope you enjoy recess! Danielle Herman
In third grade I enjoy math. I enjoy math because you get to work with numbers and you can also learn addition, subtraction, division and times and all kinds of other things. That’s why I like math. Taylee Rome
My favorite subjects are math and reading. I like them because I love reading and I love math. Mikalah Dahl

OLYMPIC PENINSULA ACADEMY
Future City’s classroom goal this year is to build a city with one main vegetable and protein. Ten students from grades 6-8 are working together to bring a concept to viable reality. Focused on such a big task, they are using the Hoh Rain Forest as a model for their future city. (Keep in mind, the future city is 150 years ahead of present day.) Many things have changed on Earth and their mission is to rejuvenate the planet and avoid their predecessors’ mistakes.
Mentor Paul Farley, with engineering experience, and enrichment coach Lilli Hardesty guide the students as they work from a rubric and time frame set by a panel of engineers in preparation for regional competition in January 2015. Students are required to build a physical model from a schematic and compose essays to articulate the main points of their futuristic microcosm.

The DigiTools Bypass test will be offered from 3-4:30 p.m. Dec. 3-4 in Room A-3. If the exam is passed, a student is exempt from having to take this class. (DigiTools is a requirement for graduation from Sequim High School). Note that passing the test will not earn high school or college credits. Students may show up at 3 p.m. to take the exam; no advance registration is required.
From handing out sweets to reuniting family members separated by great distances, the annual Winter Wishes assembly aims to fulfill dreams of as many students as possible, all of which are paid for by donations from the community. This year, senior class president Lisette Garcia says, event coordinators are asking for some help. Community members are invited to donate gifts to the school that will be awarded to students during the assembly set for 10 a.m. Dec. 18 in the gymnasium. All donations need to be dropped off at the school office by Dec. 5. The student body would like to thank you for your consideration.
