_ Get ready for outrageous culinary creations by some unusual chefs. A cook-off of recipes invented by fifth-graders from Helen Haller and Greywolf schools is set for
9 a.m.-noon Friday, May 28, at the Sequim High School cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave. Five finalists from each elementary school are competing for distinguished rankings such as "Judge’s Choice" and "Most Kid-Friendly Dish." These finalists were determined based on the healthy merits of their submitted recipes, as well as the difficulty level and variety of ingredients. The judging panel is comprised of parents and Sodexho kitchen staff members.
Anyone is welcome to attend and participate in voting for their favorite meal. The entries cover a wide variety, including teriyaki beef, fruit chips, Southwestern dip and veggies, fruit crepes, banana muffins and fruit smoothies. Children who attend receive a goodie bag with kitchen items.
HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY
_ Register your fall kindergarten student: We are looking for children who will be 5 years old on/before Aug. 31. They are eligible to start school in September. It may seem early, but we need to register your child now so we can plan appropriately for fall teaching staff. For registering your child for kindergarten, you will need to bring:
• Original birth certificate or passport
• Immunization records
• Proof of residency – something showing your physical address (lease, PUD bill, etc.)

_ Lane Danielson, a fifth-grader, placed first in a local essay contest sponsored by Sequim Elks Lodge No. 2642. His essay titled "The American Dream: What Is It?" took second place statewide and now will be judged at the national level.
Here is his essay:
"The American Dream: What Is It?"
The American Dream is to live a full life and be happy all throughout your life. Some people will say the American Dream is to have a big house and two cars, but I think that is materialism. In the Declaration of Independence it says that people have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness means you are guaranteed a safe life; you have freedoms such as freedom of speech and the freedom to live where you want. The pursuit of happiness is the freedom to pursue anything you want or like to do through education, sports, business or the arts.
Our founding fathers looked at Europe and said they didn’t want their country to be like that. They wanted to make a country where people could be judged by their own skills, not their family background. So that’s why our founding fathers wrote that in the Constitution.
I think the American Dream is a long life fulfilling your dreams. I also think it is to be very happy throughout your life, enjoying your life to the best you can make it. Finally, it is to create a life where you aren’t judged by your family background, but to be judged by your skills.

First Teacher meets next to the playground at Sequim Community School, 220 W. Alder St. Drop-in times are 9:30 a.m.-
1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There is no charge to visit the room. Parents can check out books from the parenting library and children can enjoy the playroom and playground. _ Here it comes … ART ATTACK! Join us tonight for a fun evening rich with this year’s student art work, art demonstrations, live music, snacks and student art cards for sale. Art Attack is 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, in the high school library. We hope to see you!

_ Sequim High School’s scholarship awards ceremony is 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, in the Performing Arts Building. Students who have received scholarships are recognized during this ceremony. A brief reception is held in the cafeteria following the ceremony.
At 5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 6, the Sequim Ministerial Association hosts a banquet for seniors only, followed by baccalaureate at 7 p.m. at Sequim Community Church. Baccalaureate is a nondenominational inspirational service celebrating a time of completion and a time of looking forward. All seniors, their parents and the public are invited. Attendance is not a function of, or required, by the high school. Seniors are to bring their cap and gown for the service (please leave your tassel at home).
Graduation ticket distribution for graduating (walking) seniors is Wednesday, June 9. Each walking senior will receive nine tickets and needs to pick up and sign for the tickets in the main office. Sorry, family and friends are not allowed to pick up the tickets. Lost or stolen tickets will not be replaced. The graduation ceremony is at 6 p.m. Friday, June 11, at the high school stadium.
