SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL
Eighth-grade students Sean Weber and Brenden Jack are two of eight students selected from Washington as part of 300 Broadcom MASTERS semifinalists for 2014.
The Broadcom MASTERS is a National competition of eligible middle school students from Society for Science and the Public affiliated science fairs.
The top 10 percent of eligible students are invited to apply, of which 2,054 responded this year. Semifinalists hail from 247 middle schools in 36 states and Puerto Rico, and represent 123 regional and state science fairs across the nation.
Weber’s topic is “An Investigation of Variables Which Affect Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Development on the Pacific Coast of North America.”
This project monitored water quality in the region for 19 weeks and identified HAB development, statistically analyzed 25 years of Pacific Coast bloom data and evaluated bloom growth under controlled environmental conditions.
Jack’s science fair project topic is “What Caused Gertie to Gallop?” This project used various scaled models of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to evaluate the causes of its failure from winds in 1941.
Formal written project reports by Weber and Jack will be reevaluated and 30 finalists will be selected to compete in the Math, Applied Science, Technology, Engineering and Rising Star (MASTERS) challenges to demonstrate their skills in critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 24-29.
Both Weber and Jack developed their projects as members of the after-school Sequim Science Fair Club with advisor Debra Beckett and volunteer mentors.
