Chalk Talk July 1, 2015

Summer is on but students and staff still have plenty to share from Sequim schools.

DEVELOPMENTAL PRESCHOOL/ LIFE SKILLS

This year, the Developmental Preschool, both Haller Life Skills classes and Sequim High School Life Skills class ventured over to the Kitsap County Fairgrounds for Corey’s Day on the Farm.

We had at least 30 parent volunteers go with us this year and fun was had by all. The students rode horses, went on hay rides, learned to rope cattle, got their pictures taken, visited the petting farm and ate lunches provided by the volunteer staff.

Corey’s Day on the Farm is in its 40th year and utilizes 150-200 volunteers to help run this two-day program for special needs children.

GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students in Monique Brasher’s first-grade class participated in the North Olympic Discovery Marathon on Saturday, June 6.

Students logged over 300 miles since March by running one-half mile every day and then eight individuals from the group completed the final 1.2 miles on Saturday with Brasher, who said, “I am so proud of all my students! We are runners!”

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Here is more original poetry work from Sheri Suryan’s fifth-grade class.

The students have been learning about different forms, including Haiku, Diamante, Sensory, Cinquain, Friendly, Acrostic and Free Verse.

Baseball

Playing baseball on the field

Our cleats marking the grass

I feel a little nervous

As I step up to bat

I swing at the strike

I hit the ball with a “thonk”

As I’m running

I hear my team cheering and yelling!

Ben Sweet

Fire is a Spider

Jumping place to place

Faster than most Creatures

Catching what it can

Deadly poisons come from them

Growing, growing fast

Spreading through the world

Nothing can escape

Logan Phipps

Best friends

Best

Encouraging

Splendid

Trusting

Rascals

Incredible

Everlasting

The Willow Tree

As the seasons go changing

Forever growing

Diamonds in Minecraft

Diamonds they are shiny

They are cool

You make tools

They are useful

They are decorative

You slay monsters and players and they are strong

You make armor

No one will mess with you

Then you are the true king.

Kyle Gagner

The Knight

A knight in shiny armor

As shiny as can be

A knight is awesome as can be

Although we have navy and army

A knight is better, so if you need somebody brave then call a knight

Kieran Van Selus

Random words

I went crazy

Thinking about fish

While I was playing sports

With a bunny

And I was playing football with a turtle

That lasted months

Kobe Applegate and Bailey McComas

Adventures

I love adventures

So much fun exploring

Sightseeing views

The Science Department would like to recognize those fine students who find themselves “On-a-Roll.” These students were able to boost their Term 4 grade at least 10 percentage points, sometimes more, over their Term 3 grade. Congratulations to sixth-graders Matthew McCrossen, Mya Janssen, Madisyn Rayburn, Yessi Torres, Brandon Barnett, Asia Thomas, Cole Steeby, Zoe Zimmerman and Caira Taylor. Congratulations also to eighth-graders Elijah Welch, Connor Lamb, Gabi Simonsen, Kyle Black and Tommy Hall. Keep on rolling, middle schoolers!

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL

On behalf of the science department, teacher Joe Sullivan would like to extend thanks to the Sequim Education Foundation, under president Jodi Olson’s leadership, for its support. This year, the foundation provided the high school science teachers with a grant to purchase a gas chromatograph. Chemistry teachers Isaac Rapelje and Brittany Murdach said they are very excited to share its capabilities with Sequim students for years to come. Sequim students will be able to do lab work instead of just reading about it. The gas chromatograph takes a sample and separates it out to every single ingredient for analysis.
