Chamber seeks Citizen of the Year candidates

Representatives with the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce have opened nominations for the 2024 Citizen of the Year through Jan. 31, 2025.

Created in 1968, the Citizen of the Year award was established to recognize individuals, who, through volunteer efforts, have made the Sequim-Dungeness Valley a much better place to live.

The original award went to former mayor Peter Black in 1968 for his many selfless efforts in the community.

Renne Brock won in 2023 for her efforts as an art advocate through Sequim’s First Friday Art Walk and the North Olympic Fiber Arts Festival, and volunteering for many other efforts, such as in Sequim’s Botanical Garden.

Subsequent recipients can be found at sequimchamber.com/coty/.

The Citizen of the Year committee is made up of former winners of the award. The program is chaired by the Chamber of Commerce immediate Past President held this year by Eran Kennedy, regional publisher for the Sequim Gazette, Peninsula Daily News and Forks Forum.

Nominations must be completed and received no later than 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2025.

The application and rules can be picked up in paper form from the Visitor Information Center at 1192 E. Washington St. in Sequim, or online at sequimchamber.com/coty/. This year, the form on the website is electronic, and the rules of the contest are included on the web page.

Guidelines can be found on the Chamber of Commerce website listed under events and programs.

While a Citizen of the Year award has been granted each year, on a less frequent basis a Humanitarian Award has been given. Criteria for this recognition is different and can also be found on the website.

Results will be announced on February 25th at a luncheon event hosted by the Chamber of Commerce.
