The city of Sequim promoted wellness with a two-mile poker walk on Aug. 25.
Twelve city employees and family members, and three city councilors walked from El Cazador, west along Washington Street, and stopped for playing cards at Avant Garde, Red Rooster Grocery, Over the Fence, Tessa Boutique/Solar City, White Cup Espresso and Sofie’s Florist.
First place went to Steven Rose, IT manager; second to Dennis Osborn, city consultant; and third to Lorri Gilchrist, Public Works administrative assistant.
Sequim was named a 2009 Well City for promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles among its employees.
If the city receives the award again in 2010, then in 2011 it will receive 2 percent off its health care costs, a savings of about $4,000.
Currently, staff is measuring their steps through the end of September to see who walks the farthest.
City Clerk Bobbie Usselman said this was the first time for the walking event and she hopes it encourages more employees to participate in the program.
The city has 72 employees.
