Forty-two seats on Nov. 2 ballot

Today is the first day of the candidate filing period for the Nov. 2 general election.

Several hopefuls already have registered with the state Public Disclosure Commission (PDC) to allow them to collect campaign contributions.

The candidate filing period for the 42 positions in Clallam County is from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. today through Friday.

Port of Port Angeles commissioners Colleen McAleer and Steven Burke plan to run for reelection. McAleer has filed with the PDC with no funds reported as of Friday.

The offices are among the elected city council, school board, hospital district and other tax district positions up for grabs on the Peninsula in the Nov. 2 off-year general election — 42 in Clallam County, 46 in Jefferson County.

Five Sequim City Council office holders are running in November. Four are appointees asking voters to elect them to their seats, and one, Brandon Janisse, is seeking a second term.

Sequim council members Rachel Anderson, Keith Larkin, Mike Pence and Sarah Kincaid were all appointed.

Lowell Rathbun, an active member of the Democratic Party, and Kathleen Downer, a member of the city’s planning commission, have filed to run for council seats with the PDC. No funds were reported as of Friday, and the positions they are seeking have not been announced.

Janisse, Kincaid, Pence and Anderson also have filed with the PDC with no funds reported.

Janisse and Anderson have Facebook campaign sites.

Three of the Port Angeles City Council officeholders running for reelection — La Trisha Suggs, Lindsey Schromen-Wawrin, Mike French and Kate Dexter — have filed with the PDC. They are Suggs, Schromen-Wawrin and Dexter, none with any funding reported as of Friday.

Suggs was appointed in 2019 to fill the late Jim Moran’s term. Schromen-Wawrin and Dexter are seeking second terms of elected office.

In Forks, 12 years was long enough for council member John Hillcar. Council member Joe Soha was undecided as of Friday, while elected Forks Mayor Tim Fletcher vowed to seek a second term. None have filed with the PDC.

Sarah Methner, incumbent on the Port Angeles School Board, has said she intends to run for reelection. Incumbent Cindy Kelly has not announced her intentions..

The best way to file for office is online, according to Susan Johnson, Clallam County election coordinator. Filing is available online 24 hours daily during the filing period beginning at 8:30 a.m. today and ending at 4:30 p.m. Friday at voter.votewa.gov/candidatefiling/candidatelogin.aspx.

Candidates must be registered to vote in their districts, provide valid email addresses and pay filing fees.

If needed, election staff also is available to assist in filing using the in-office kiosks at the courthouse at 223 E. Fourth St. in Port Angeles between 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. during filing week.

Candidates also can file through the mail or using the drive-up drop box at the county courthouse.

When filing by mail, candidates must send the candidate declaration and filing fee to: Clallam County Elections, 223 E. Fourth St., Suite 1, Port Angeles, WA 98362. The documents must be in the county Auditor’s Office by 4:30 p.m. Friday.
