Interested in becoming certified to inspect your own septic system? Attend the Septics 201 Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Self-Inspection class.
Clallam County Environmental Health is offering Septics 201 classes this October and November. Pre-registration is required and available online at www.clallam.net under “Online Services” or by calling 417-2506. Spaces are limited.
This free, 90-minute class provides homeowners an overview of the what, why and how of safely inspecting a septic system and includes an instructional video, a brief demonstration and a short exam.
Not all septic systems are eligible for homeowner inspection and systems located in the Marine Recovery Area (between Bagley Creek watershed and east to the county boundary) must first be inspected by a licensed septic inspector.
Septic inspections are required by state law. Gravity septic systems are inspected every three years; all other systems are inspected annually.
Program organizers note that pumping is not the same as an inspection.
The Septics 201 classes is held at the Dungeness River Audubon Center from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim.
Septics 101 — either the in-person class or online version at www.clallam.net/Septics101 — is a prerequisite for Septics 201. Not all septic types are eligible for Septics 201 DIY inspections. Before registering, go to www.clallam.net/septic, click on “Summary of Septic System Inspection Requirements” to check your eligibility.
An online Septics 201 DIY course also is available via the Environmental Health website accessible at www.clallam.net/Septics201DIY.
