The 2013 version of Sequim’s Cranksgiving is in the record books — and what an event it was.
With 54 riders participating on Nov. 23, locals collected 867 pounds of food and $574, all for the Sequim Food Bank — nearly double the total from the 2012 event.
As with the two previous local “Cranksgiving” events, riders spent the day traversing the area, delivering items to the Sequim Food Bank as they competed for prizes.
This year’s event winners include:
• The Big Kahuna (most food gathered by weight): Ken Stringer, 27 pounds of food
• The Little Kahuna (lightest load of required items); Larry McCaffrey, less than 8 pounds
• Fastest Finisher (fastest to shop all stores and return with required items): Randy Barber, 35 minutes and 13 pounds
• Oldest Rider: Henry Lingan, 75 (12 pounds of food)
• Youngest Rider: McHenry Miller, 3 (16 pounds of food with a little help from Mom and Dad)
Event organizers thanked All Around Bikes, Ben’s Bikes and Black Bear Diner for raffle prizes, Rainshadow Coffee for coffee and the after-party, area food stores, Sequim Gazette, Peninsula Daily News and In Graphic Detail and volunteers for their support.
Cranksgiving is held each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving as a way for cyclists to socialize, compete and enjoy themselves while also gathering food for local food banks in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.
