SBYC rowing lessons
Sequim Bay Yacht Club’s first spring learn-to-row program for adults starts May 11 with a classroom session and continues with five on-water classes from 7-9 a.m. in a stable quad shell in calm Sequim Bay.
Subsequent sessions start May 18 and June 1.
Two students row in each of the two-hour classes Monday-Friday with two SBYC master rowers as mentors and club coach Guy Lawrence as instructor. Personal flotation devices will be provided.
Classes are open to the public. The fee is $275.

Want to literally test the water? Prospective rowers can step into a shell and sample rowing on Sunday, May 4, when SBYC hosts “Experience Rowing” as part of its “Opening Day of Boating Season” activities at John Wayne Marina.
Starting at 9 a.m. near the marina launch ramp, those 18 and older can sign up for complimentary 30-minute how-to sessions on rowing machines and on the water with experienced SBYC rowers.
Registration information will be available for those who wish to sign up for the club’s learn-to-row classes.
Puget Sound Anglers
Puget Sound Anglers North Olympic Peninsula Chapter will host an open-to-the-public general meeting today (March 19) at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Rd. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will start at 7 p.m.
The speaker will be John Beath talking about halibut fishing in local waters. Beath is an experienced fishing guide and fishing tackle manufacturer. He will cover the latest techniques for successful halibut fishing, including where to fish, rigs, lures, baits, use of UV, anchoring techniques and more.
Following the presentation, there will be a short business meeting, fishing reports, and then raffle drawings. In addition to regular bucket raffles, the drawings will include the March Big Ticket Raffle for a Tanacom 750 electric reel. Tickets for all raffles will be on sale at the meeting.
Raffles are for members only, but those who join that night can participate. An annual individual membership is $25, and a family membership is $35. Membership also includes The Reel News monthly newspaper.
Shred fundraiser
A Lemay Mobile Shredding truck will be on the parking lot of the former JCPenney store (near the temporary library location) from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, March 22 to shred sensitive documents.
The shred event is sponsored by the Five Acre Parent Service Organization (PSO). Members will accept contributions for the school’s Tuition Assistance Fund. Suggested donation is $20, or more for larger quantities of materials to shred. Cash, check and cards will be accepted.
The PSO’s mission is to support and connect Five Acre School families and the community through volunteer engagement, social events, tuition assistance and resource supplementation.
Tribute to Vietnam veterans
The Michael Trebert Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Jack Grennan American Legion Post 62 invite the public to participate in a tribute to Vietnam War veterans at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 29.
The event will take place at the American Legion post, 107 E. Prairie St. in Sequim.
The tribute will honor the service, courage and sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and their families. Vietnam Veteran lapel pins will be presented to Vietnam veterans who have not yet received that recognition.
Guest speaker will be Daniel Abbott, gunnery sergeant E-7 of the United States Marine Corps from Post 62 in Sequim.
Refreshments will be served following the brief ceremony.
Michael Trebert DAR has participated in the Department of Defense Commemorative Partner program since 2020, distributing more than 350 pins to Vietnam veterans across the country at 11 different locations. The initiative aims to help the nation express its appreciation and honor Vietnam veterans and their families. Since 2012, 4.1 million veterans have been acknowledged at more than 28,000 events nationwide.
Farm Family of the Year
The 2025 Clallam County Fair is seeking nominations for the 2025 Farm Family of the Year. This award is to honor a Clallam County farm that epitomizes the spirit of the industry and to show appreciation for hardworking Clallam County farm families committed to the agriculture and aquaculture of Clallam County.
It is permissible for farm families to nominate themselves. The Farm Family of the Year will be selected and notified by June 1.
The chosen family will receive free admission for all days of the fair (up to eight individuals).
Nominations need to include details about the farm and how the family fulfills the following criteria:
1. Production of Clallam County-grown products (quantity not a factor).
2. Community involvement (civic organizations, school, sports, etc.).
3. Involvement in agriculture industry organizations (local, state and federal).
4. Overall farm family image, farming history, and unique or special production.
Pictures are optional but will not affect the outcome.
Along with the name of the farm, nominations should list the person nominating along with contact information. Nominations should also include a contact name for the farm as well as the contact’s mailing address, phone number and email address.

Book sale
The Port Angeles Friends of the Library (PAFOL) will hold its monthly Bag of Books sale from Thursday, March 20 through Saturday March 22. New store hours are 10:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. New books are added daily during the sale.
Books will be in the entry lobby of the Port Angeles Branch of NOLS. Patrons can bring their own PAFOL book bag and fill it for $3, fill a PAFOL-provided bag for $5, or buy a new PAFOL book bag for $8 that is filled for free.
Proceeds support the PAFOL which in turn funds special projects and programs hosted by NOLS.
