Celebrating the WIN
Rep. and House Majority Leader Lynn Kessler will be the keynote speaker at the 2009 Women in Networks celebration at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at The Oak Table Café in Sequim.
The WIN program is celebrating its 13th year as a partnership between Soroptimist International of Sequim and Sequim High School. The program is dedicated to helping young women explore a variety of career options aimed at providing longterm economic well-being; it is open to all Sequim High School girls.

Diabetes forum
Susan Sorensen, R.N., will speak on "Five Keys for Dealing With Diabetes to Improve One’s Health." The free community health forum will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic (Sequim’s "free clinic"), at the rear of the building at 777 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Day boosts disability awareness
Clallam County’s Disability Employment Awareness Day is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Rotunda Room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Clallam County commissioners will read their proclamation of October as Disability Employment Awareness Month. Voting machines for people with vision issues who cannot use the typical ballot will be demonstrated.
Wheelchairs will be on hand for enabled persons to experience a different perspective on mobility. Self-advocates will be available to talk about the benefits in being employed. A wide variety of movies will be shown.
AARP driver safety classes
Safe driver classes are offered by AARP. Anyone over the age of 55 is given an insurance discount after taking the classes. Classes are 8 a.m.-noon Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 2-3, and repeated 8 a.m.-noon Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 1-2, at the Fire District 3 headquarters on North Fifth Avenue in Sequim. Safety fair set
for Saturday
The Sequim Public Safety Fair is slated for 10 a.m.-
4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Guy Cole Center at Carrie Blake Park on Blake Avenue in Sequim.
Federal, state, county and local agencies will show off emergency equipment, pass out information at booths, explain crime prevention and emergency preparedness techniques, and discuss personal safety.
Highlights include police vehicles and tools, car seat installations and inspections, a Coast Guard helicopter landing, various emergency vehicles, fire trucks and food from Jeremiah’s BBQ.

Winter schedule
for state parks
The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission has announced its 2009/2010 winter schedule, with more than 100 parks remaining open seven days a week.
Each year, the commission publishes a winter schedule that establishes which parks will remain open, which will close and which will offer limited services.

Officers installed
Kiwanis Club of
Sequim’s officers for 2009-2010 are Joe Treece, president; Bill McHugh, vice president; Richard Fleck, treasurer; and Janice Teeter, secretary.
The club installed the officers at a dinner where it was announced that OlyPen has given 31 computers to families and groups in Jefferson and Clallam counties.
Sequim Kiwanis is accepting working computer printers to be donated to in-need families and individuals.
Partnering with OlyPen, Kiwanis members seek out those in need of a computer in Sequim and on the Olympic Peninsula.
More than 25 computers have been donated since the program began this fall.

Ride the trail
to see NOLT lands
Lorrie Campbell will guide a bicycle tour long the Olympic Discovery Trail, visiting four North Olympic Land Trust conservation easement properties and one NOLT-owned property along the way.
The tour will take place this Saturday, Oct. 17. To participate, meet at Robin Hill County Park (Pinnell Road parking lot) at 9 a.m. Bring your own bicycle and helmet, water and appropriate clothing, and a sack lunch/snack.
The bike ride will total 14 miles – but participants may choose shorter routes. For more information, call the NOLT office at 417-1815.
