Sequim man rear-ends patrol car

A Sequim man faces a traffic citation and probably a lot of teasing after rear-ending a Sequim Police car in the Ninth Avenue roundabout on Thursday, Jan. 21.

The Washington State Patrol was called to investigate because a Sequim Police officer was involved.

The patrol car was driven by Sgt. Dave Campbell, who had slowed to yield the right of way to another vehicle in the roundabout when it was struck from behind, said Washington State Patrol spokeswoman Krista Hedstrom.

The driver of the other car, 70-year-old Samuel Smith, of Sequim, faces a traffic citation for following too closely, she said. No one was injured and the vehicles were not damaged, Hedstrom said.

Blood drive scheduled

A blood drive will be held from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the parking lot at Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 923 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim. The drive will be closed for lunch between 1-2 p.m.

Aglow on new day

Sequim Aglow’s monthly meetings now are the first Thursday of the month.

The next meeting will be 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, Feb. 4, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim. Several couples will share their sweetheart stories about how God brought them together with their spouse. A Valentine brunch will be served.

Coho ferry out of service

through Feb. 9

The Black Ball ferry M.V. Coho is out of service through Feb. 9 for annual drydock maintenance. The 341-foot ferry that travels between Port Angeles and Victoria, British Columbia, is at the Dakota Creek Industries Shipyard in Anacortes for routine maintenance, repairs and upgrades.

Daily service between Port Angeles and Victoria resumes Feb. 10.

The board of commissioners of Clallam County Fire District No. 3 rescheduled the Feb. 2 and March 2 regular meetings to 1 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 8 and March 8. Both meetings will be at 323 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Pound for Pound food drive

On Sunday, Jan. 31, the Sequim High School wrestling team will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Sequim Food Bank. Team members, coaches and parents will be at the Sequim Safeway from noon-5 p.m.

The goal is to collect more than 2,171 pounds of food, which is the combined weight of a full varsity roster. Last year the team collected more than 2,700 pounds of food and $300 in donations. All donations go directly to the Sequim Food Bank.

Bridge work coming to an end

Motorists using the State Route 104 Hood Canal bridge soon will travel more easily during the daytime, but intermittent nighttime bridge closures continue.

Drivers can expect 40-minute daytime ballast test openings at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 27, and 12:30 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 28. That should end daytime testing.

The nighttime work requires 90-minute closures as crews work through a functional testing checklist and review all systems on the bridge’s west half. The closures will be between 10 p.m.-4 a.m. Monday through Friday for at least three weeks.

Following functional testing, the bridge must have 20 consecutive error-free openings to demonstrate reliability.

Daniele sausages recalled

Fourteen cases of salmonella poisoning, have been reported in Washington from 1.2 million pounds of Italian sausage products from Daniele International.

The company’s products are sold at local retailers such as Walmart and Costco. More than 100 cases have been reported in 38 states.

Learn to sculpt found wood

Olympic Driftwood Sculptors meets from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road.

Plans for the February show at the Dungeness River Audubon Center will be finalized. Members will spend the balance of the meeting time working on their projects.

Prune trees correctly

Olympic Orchard Society holds its annual classroom pruning workshop, in lieu of its regular monthly meeting, beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, at McComb Gardens Nursery, 751 McComb Road, off Old Olympic Highway in Sequim.

Chis Austin, a certified arborist, will give a short presentation with handouts on various pruning definitions and techniques.

Following the presentation at McComb Gardens, directions will be given to two Sequim orchards for hands-on pruning demonstrations.

The event is co-sponsored by Olympic Orchard Society and McComb Gardens Nursery. Participants should bring pruning tools and dress warmly to be outside.
