City collects for food bank

The Sequim Police Department, 609 W. Washington St., and Sequim City Hall, 152 W. Cedar St., will accept donations of nonperishable food items now through Friday, Dec. 21, for the Sequim Food Bank. Hours for the police department are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday; Sequim City Hall hours are 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday. A year-round food donation container is at the Sequim Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St.

Locke’s service honored

At its 6 p.m. meeting today, Dec. 5, the Board of Commissioners of Olympic Medical Center will honor Thomas Locke, M.D., MPH, health officer for Clallam and Jefferson counties, for 25 years of service. The meeting is in Linkletter Hall in the basement Olympic Memorial Hospital, 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles. According to a proclamation by the Clallam Board of County Commissioners, Dec. 1-8 is declared Dr. Thomas Locke appreciation week in Clallam County.

Food Bank collection set up

The local branch of Edward Jones, 755-C W. Washington St., is collecting food for the Sequim Food bank from Dec. 5-28. Business hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Auction aids Hurricane victims

The Port Angeles Downtown Association’s silent auction to benefit the Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund has been extended through Thursday, Dec. 6. Participating businesses have items and bid sheets available. See port angelesdowntown.com for a list of stores and items.

Church raises first flag for veterans

Cornerstone Baptist Temple, 44 Joslin Road, Sequim, invites people to show their appreciation to fallen and living soldiers at its inaugural flag-raising ceremony on Friday, Dec. 7. Church leaders will honor fallen men and women of Pearl Harbor and those who have served the country in and out of the U.S. Armed Forces beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the flag-raising at 9:53 a.m. A brunch follows the service in the fellowship hall.  Call the church at 681-3832.

Christmas House helps families

Sequim families in need can enjoy lunch and pick up a new present for each member of the family during the “Christmas House,” 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Dungeness Community Church, 45 Eberle Lane, while supplies last. Saturday book sale at library

Friends of the Sequim Library holds its Second Saturday Book Sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Dec. 8 at the library, 630 N. Sequim Avenue. All proceeds go toward library programs.

‘Cradle of Caring’ set for Saturday

The Sequim Rainbow Girls hold their third annual Cradle of Caring baby item drive from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at QFC, 990 E. Washington St., Sequim. They will collect baby food, cereal, formula, diapers and other items, as well as cash. All proceeds go to the Sequim Food Bank.

Paws to Read continues

Paws to Read meets at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, and continues on the second Saturday of each month through June 8, 2013. In collaboration with Olympic Gentle Paws Therapy Dog Club, the program gives children a chance to practice reading or just talking to therapy dogs in a fun setting.

Balloon club hosts potluck

The Olympic Peninsula Balloon Club, launched in November, holds its first Holiday Potluck at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at La Vina Cafe, 111 River Road, Sequim. All ages are welcome. Christmas Lane Fair set

More than 30 crafters offer handmade creations for sale during the Christmas Lane Fair from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave. The “Holly Daze Cafe” will serve soup, pie, cake, cinnamon rolls, beverages and its specialty chili. Center hosts Christmas concert

The Sequim Senior Activity Center, 921 E. Hammond St., presents a Christmas concert featuring the Olympic Men’s Chorus at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9. Refreshments are provided. Admission is $5 ($4 members).

Elks serve hearty breakfast

The Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, hosts breakfast from 8:30-11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 9. The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, link sausage, biscuits with sausage gravy, orange juice and coffee/tea. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Grange hosts Christmas potluck

Sequim Prairie Grange invites the community to its Family Christmas Dinner at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at 290 Macleay Road. Turkey with all the trimmings and ham are provided for the potluck dinner and Santa will pay a visit. Donations will be accepted for the Sequim Food Bank.
