Peninsula publisher addresses Democrats
John Brewer, publisher of the Peninsula Daily News, speaks to the Clallam County Democratic Club at its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. today, March 14, at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St., Sequim.
Brewer discusses the “rules of the road” for the PDN’s editorial pages: how letters to the editor are selected, what topics are appropriate for occasional longer columns and what topics, if any, are off-limits. The public is welcome.
MoveOn’s ‘Save our Homes’
Clallam County MoveOn holds a “Save Our Homes” action at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15, on the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street in Sequim, to demand that government-controlled mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac provide relief to homeowners by adjusting their mortgages. Thrift shop open Saturday
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St., Sequim, will be open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 17.
St. Patrick’s Day items, gently used men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and accessories for the home are featured.
All white-tagged items will be marked at half price during the sale. Proceeds from the thrift shop are returned to the community. Call 683-7044.
Status of seabirds on agenda
The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center in Railroad Bridge Park.
Julia Parrish, a seabird biologist, presents an audiovisual program on the many threats to seabirds. The program is free and open to the public.
Shelter Providers Network meets March 21
A look at progress toward ending homelessness in Clallam County is featured at the meeting of the Shelter Providers Network of Clallam County, 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, in the downstairs fellowship hall of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles.
The meeting is open to everyone interested in ending homelessness.

Access your veterans benefits
Registered Veterans Service officers Thomas Flanik and Jake Fish discuss how to access veterans benefits that many may not be aware of from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at Prairie Springs, 680 W. Washington St., Sequim.
Benefits include aid and attendance for long-term care and medical benefits for hearing loss, Agent Orange and asbestosis. Flanik and Fish can help veterans access service records and get long-pending claims processed.

Irrigation Festival kicks off with dinner, auctions
The 117th Sequim Irrigation Festival Kick-off Dinner and Auction is at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Club Seven Room at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 Highway 101, Blyn.
The evening includes dinner, a silent auction, a live auction and entertainment by past Irrigation Festival Queen Jennifer Horton.
Tickets are $65 and are available at KeyBank, Sound Community Bank, Pacific Mist Books and the Sequim Visitor Information Center.
Benefit presents ‘Midnight in Paris’
First Step Family Support Center’s fourth annual Midnight in Paris dinner and auction fundraiser is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at C’est Si Bon, 23 Cedar Park Drive, Port Angeles. Dinner, wine, live and silent auctions, raffles and an optional 1920s costume contest are included in the $75 ticket price. Cub Scouts hold drive for animals
Sequim Cub Scout Pack 4490 holds its fourth “food and funds” drive from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at Petco, 1205 W. Washington St., Sequim. Donors can drop off or purchase and drop off food, litter or cleaning supplies with the uniformed Cub Scouts for local animal shelters.
Take wing at Olympic BirdFest 2012
The Olympic BirdFest celebration is March 30-April 1 at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson St., Sequim. Sequim Prairie Grange offers scholarships
The Sequim Prairie Grange #1108 accepts scholarship applications through Friday, April 30, from graduating seniors, continuing college students or seniors going to a technical school. Each applicant must be a member or a child, grandchild or great-grandchild of a current member, or of a deceased life member, of the Sequim Prairie Grange #1108.

Relief for certain taxpayers
The Internal Revenue Service has announced a major expansion of its “Fresh Start” initiative to help struggling taxpayers by taking steps to provide new penalty relief to the unemployed and making installment agreements available to more people.
Taxpayers meeting the eligibility criteria will need to complete a new Form 1127A to seek the 2011 penalty relief. The new form is available on www.irs.gov/form1127.
