Planning Commission meets today

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. today, Nov. 2, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The agenda includes continued public hearing on Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Map Amendment Application REZ2010-00004.

Public comment will be heard; requested limit of three minutes. Call the Planning Department at 417-2420.

Driving safety classes

AARP offers free driving safety classes to all veterans and their spouses in November. Sequim’s next November class will be

9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday-Friday. Nov. 3-4, at

Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim.

Identification indicating service at one time in any of the military branches will be needed for the free class.

AARP members who are not veterans pay $12 and non-AARP members pay $14 on the first day of the class.

Legacy hosts talk on Soi Dogs of Thailand

Jennifer Brown of Phuket, Thailand, presents a free talk with videos on the efforts of the Soi Dog Foundation from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Legacy Canine Behavior and Training, 252 Kitchen-Dick Road, Sequim. Soi Dog helps the abused dogs and cats of Thailand where the dog meat trade is still active.

Celebrate Family Literacy Day

The Clallam County Literacy Council sponsors a Family Literacy Day on Saturday, Nov. 5. The Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., will “Piece Together a Good Story,” with families welcome to design their own puzzles from

10 a.m.-noon. The Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., welcomes families with a Building Blocks and Literacy theme from 10 a.m.-noon. Children will receive free books to add to their family libraries. Call 683-1161.

MoveOn rally scheduled

Clallam County MoveOn hosts a “Make Wall Street Pay” rally at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street in Sequim. The public is welcome. For more information, call 683-1954.

Chimes sound in system test

Winchester Chimes will sound for 10 seconds at noon Monday, Nov. 7, for the monthly test of the six All Hazard Alert Broadcast Sirens in Clallam County.

A voice message will state that it is a test of the system, which sends warning notifications to people outside on coastal beaches at LaPush, Neah Bay, Clallam Bay, Lower Elwha, West Port Angeles, Dungeness and Diamond Point.

Citizens who are outside and hear the siren test are asked to call in information about where they were when they heard the test siren.

Call 417-2525 the day of the test and the day after.

‘Surviving the Holidays’ is workshop theme

Assured Hospice of Sequim invites the public to a “Surviving the Holidays” workshop from 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. The workshop includes discussions of coping with grief and what may bring comfort. A take-away packet of tips, articles and recipes is available and refreshments will be served. ‘Drowning Ruth’ subject of book discussion

“Drowning Ruth” by Christina Schwarz will be discussed at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Multiple copies of the book are available at the Sequim Library and can be requested online through the library catalog at www.nols.org. Preregistration is not required and drop-ins are welcome.  

Good news for Kindle owners

Amazon.com has announced that its popular Kindle e-reader is compatible with hundreds of e-books included in the North Olympic Library System’s Washington Anytime Library. The agreement between Amazon and Overdrive, the service that provides e-book lending to libraries, makes it possible to check out and download titles to a Kindle e-reader or other electronic device running the Kindle app.

To find and check out a Kindle-compatible e-book, go to the NOLS website at www.nols.org and click on the Kindle icon. The checkout process takes you through your Amazon account to download the book. You have the option of a 14- or 21-day loan period.

Masonic lodge offers breakfast

Port Angeles Masonic Lodge #69 hosts an “All You Can Eat Breakfast” from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. the first Sunday of the month at 622 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.

The requested donation is $8 for adults; $5 for seniors age 65 and older and free for children under age 10.

Proceeds will benefit charity and scholarship funds.

Outstanding volunteer sought

Soroptimist International of Sequim is accepting applications from young women, 14-17, for the Violet Richardson Award for volunteer work and leadership. Applicants are eligible for a first-place award of $500, with an additional $250 donated to their volunteer organization, and a second-place award of $250.

Applications can be downloaded at www.sisequim.org under “Educational Support.” Instructions are on the website and all applications are due by Dec. 1.
