Clallam Planning Commission meets

Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. today, Sept. 7, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The agenda includes the “Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program 2012 to 2017.” Public comment will be taken.

Shellfish closure lifted for some Clallam beaches

The Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services lifted the shellfish closure for beaches on the Strait of Juan de Fuca from the Dungeness Spit westward to Cape Flattery on Sept 1. Sequim Bay and Discovery Bay remained closed to all species. Lions offer free health screening

The Lions Health Screening Unit will visit the Safeway parking lot, 620 W. Washington St., Sequim, from 10 a.m.-

4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9. The unit will be in the parking lot just east of Burger King.

The free screening is sponsored by the Sequim Valley Lions Club.

The unit is staffed by volunteer health professionals and Lions Club members.

Friends of Animals plan garage sale

Peninsula Friends of Animals holds its annual end-of-summer garage sale from

8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, and Saturday, Sept. 10, at 223 Secor Road, Sequim.

In its 11-year history, the local nonprofit rescue organization has found homes for more than 1,500 cats and assisted in spay/neutering more than 5,000 cats.

AAUW Meets

The American Association of University Women meets for lunch and a monthly branch meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Mariner Café, 707 E. Washington St., Sequim. NOLT work party set

North Olympic Land Trust hosts a volunteer work party from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 10. Work will take place at the Siebert Creek Conservation Area (end of Siebert Creek Road). Projects include clearing and leveling a picnic area, Scotch broom removal, and brushing out a new trail route (two sawyers needed, plus one saw). Many helpers are needed. Ethnobotanical tour of Webster’s Woods offered

Victoria-based naturalist Joe Percival leads an ethnobotanical tour of the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center Webster’s Woods at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd. Among the exhibition works of Art Outside, Percival will search out edible and medicinal plants that were important to the original inhabitants of the Salish Sea ecosystem.

A donation of $6 is requested, Friends of PAFAC $5. Shoes suitable for trail walking are recommended.

Days of Caring and Service on Sept. 10

The City of Sequim and United Way of Clallam County host volunteer activities across the city starting with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at

Sequim City Hall, 152 W. Cedar St. Activities begin at 9 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. To volunteer, visit City Hall until noon the day of the event or call United Way at 457-3011.

Snap plans dance, potluck, classes

Snap, a local nonprofit serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, sponsors a dance from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Olympic Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 3145 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.

The event is a potluck and the fee is $3. Everyone is invited; minors must be supervised by adults.

Dancing with the dogs

The Emerald City K-9 Freestyle Dancers holds its 10th anniversary “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” freestyle competition of owner/dog choreography Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 10-11, at the Guy Cole Convention Center in Sequim’s Carrie Blake Park. Events begin at 11 a.m. Saturday and at 10 a.m. Sunday.

The public is welcome to observe and take non-flash photographs. Space is limited; no nonparticipant dogs permitted.
