The board of commissioners of Clallam County Fire District 3 has rescheduled its Jan. 4 regular meeting to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at the district station at 323 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Planning commission seat vacant

The city of Sequim seeks an applicant who lives within the city limits for the planning commission. The position is open until filled. The vacancy is for a term that expires on Jan. 10, 2012.

The commission meets at 6 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays each month.

The voluntary commission serves as an advisory body to the city council on land use and zoning issues.

Tax return help

IRS-certified AARP TAX-AIDE volunteers will be available on Wednesdays and Saturdays starting in February and extending through the tax season in April. They will prepare and electronically file tax returns free of charge.

The volunteers are authorized to prepare most basic tax returns. They do not prepare returns for taxpayers who have income from rental properties or for taxpayers with complicated business returns.  

The AARP TAX-AIDE program is sponsored by the IRS and the AARP Foundation. TAX-AIDE volunteers prepare returns for low- and middle-income taxpayers of all ages. Membership in AARP is not required.

Appointments can be made, starting in late January, by contacting the Sequim Senior Activity Center at 683-6806.

Ross Crockford speaks at the Clallam County Historical Society’s History Tales at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, in the Port Angeles City Council Chambers, 321 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles. The event is free.

Crockford gives an overview of Victoria, British Columbia’s development and concerns from its founding to the present, the city as a tourist destination and some of the people who have passed through.

A former trial lawyer, he started working at The Prague Post, an English-language newspaper in eastern Europe, in the 1990s.

‘Adrian Cross’ cast party set

Cast and crew from the original radio drama “Adrian Cross, For Hire — The Schooner Mystic Rose,” host a cast party fundraiser from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at Olympic Cellars Winery, 255410 Highway 101.

The premier of the radio drama is set for 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, on KSQM 91.5 FM.

Travel series embarks

Adventure Travel Series 2011 begins at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, in the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles.

Elston and Jackie Hill speak about “Midway Atoll, A Most Unusual Wildlife Preserve.”

Upcoming programs include Steve Hauff, “Building the Spruce Railroad,” Jan. 14; John Wegmann, “Travels in Mongolia: From the Gobi to the Taiga Forest,” Jan. 21; and Hal Everett, “The World Underwater,” Jan. 28.

The series is a Peninsula Trails Coalition fundraiser to buy supplies and lunches for volunteers working on the Olympic Discovery Trail. Admission is $5 and free to ages 12 and under.

Worship service

Sequim Presbyterian Fellowship meets for worship at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, at the Holiday Inn Express, 1441 E. Washington St., Sequim.

Quarters are open

The Commanding Officer’s Quarters Museum at Fort Worden will be open New Year’s Day.

The 1904 home has been specially decorated for the holiday season.  

The museum will be open for tours noon-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, Dec. 27-31.

Adult admission is $4. Children 16 and under are free.   Proceeds support programs of the Jefferson County Historical Society.

Office receives Circle of Honor

Clallam County Sheriff’s Office received the “Circle of Honor” Award for organizing the Special Olympics law enforcement fundraising activities in the area.

Events include area officers carrying the torch from Laird’s Corner to the Kitsap County side of the Hood Canal bridge in one day for the torch run; and the Applebee’s Restaurant Tip a Cop, where proceeds are given to the program.

In addition to the Special Olympics athletes and their families, local participants include the Port Angeles Police Department; Sequim Police; Port Townsend Police; U.S. Coast Guard; Washington State Patrol; Department of Corrections; U.S. Border Patrol; and National Park Service.
