SARC board meets today

The Clallam County Parks and Recreation District #1 (SARC) board will be conducting a second board meeting to complete this month’s agenda. The meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. today, Jan. 18, at the Sequim Bible Church, 847 N. Sequim Ave.

Volunteers to plant trees

The North Olympic Salmon Coalition invites the public to a volunteer tree planting along Morse Creek from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21.  

Volunteers will be protecting and transplanting trees in one of the biggest restoration projects on the peninsula. Bring warm clothes, water and lunch.

PUD mails CFLs to residential customers

Beginning as early as this week, Clallam County PUD residential customers will receive five free Energy Star® qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs mailed directly to their home courtesy of the PUD. Distribution of the CFLs should be complete by early March.

In addition to energy and cost savings for the customers, the mailing of CFLs helps the PUD reach conservation targets mandated by the Washington Energy Independence Act. A rate presentation named “Electric Rates Presentation” explaining both items, rate pressures and CFLs cost effectiveness, is available online at www.clallampud.net by clicking the “P.U.D. TV” icon on the right hand margin of the home page.  

Clallam planning commission meets

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. today, Jan. 18, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The agenda includes the election of officers; planning commission bylaws; the 2012 work plan; updates on the Shoreline Master Program, Carlsborg UGA sewer and stormwater management; and preliminary draft shoreline environmental designations.

Time is set aside for public comment, requested 3-minute time limit per speaker. Hearing devices are available.

Group to hold rally

Clallam County MoveOn hosts a “Yes, He Can Hold Banks Accountable” rally at noon, Thursday, Jan. 19, at the corner of Sequim Avenue and West Washington Street. Organizers said they want President Barack Obama to hold Wall Street bankers and financiers accountable following bailouts. The event follows MoveOn’s Day of Action. Gorilla presentation rescheduled

Dr. Jode Garbe’s presentation on mountain gorillas of Rwanda, sponsored by Readers Theatre Plus, has been rescheduled to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, Sequim.

Around Again hosts free 3-D drawing class

Planning in 3-D allows a homeowner to walk around or through a home project before building. Around Again, 22 Gilbert Road, Sequim, offers an introduction to a free online 3-D drawing program from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21. Anyone with some computer skills should be comfortable with the program in about an hour.

There is no fee, but reservations are required and the class is limited to 20 people. Call 683-7862 by Jan. 19 to sign up.

Free family matinee flicks at P.A. Library

Saturday Matinees at the Library continue at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Port Angeles Library. January’s film is a rollicking adventure across the countryside with the best of friends, a pug and an orange tabby cat, narrated by actor Dudley Moore.

Offered the third Saturday of each month, this family friendly movie series features beloved children’s movie classics, discussion and popcorn.

The program is free of charge is supported by the Port Angeles Friends of the Library. The Port Angeles Library is at 2210 S. Peabody St.

Skills Center students share streamkeeping projects

All Streamkeepers and community members are invited to a celebration of learning, service and community from 4-6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, in Room 206 in the Skills Center, 905 W. Ninth St., Port Angeles.

Skills Center Natural Resources students worked as Streamkeepers of Valley Creek through the fall semester in order to complete their senior culminating projects and will share their final presentations.

Participants can learn about the state of local creeks and support local student scientists.

Job search class offered

Raffle tickets support graduation party

Parents of Sequim High School seniors are selling raffle tickets for a chance to win $750 or $250 Costco cash cards to support the senior graduation party, a drug- and alcohol-free event for students to safely celebrate their accomplishments.

Ticket sales are limited to 1,200 tickets and winners are drawn Feb. 13.

Buy tickets at Safeway, QFC or Walmart on Jan. 21, Jan. 28 or Feb. 4. Tickets also will be on sale at Sequim High School’s Senior Night Live event, set for Jan. 27-28. Tickets also may be purchased from Jim Stoffer at 775-9356 or Brenda Carpenter at 477-0931.

A free community dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim.

Reservations are requested and may be made by phoning the church, 683-5367, between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by e-mailing dinners@sequimtumc.org.

The church presents free dinners on the last Thursday of each month.
