Slowriver addresses Democratic Club

Jack Slowriver, area services manager of Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest, will speak at the meeting of the Clallam County Democratic Club at 7 p.m. today, Feb. 8, at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St., Sequim.

Slowriver will focus her discussion on the implications of the initial Susan G. Komen Foundation decision to withdraw support from Planned Parenthood. Last week, Komen reversed its decision.

The meeting is open to the public.

Planning commission cancels

The Feb. 15 Clallam County Planning Commission meeting is cancelled. The commission reconvenes March 7.

‘Into Thin Air’ discussed

Jon Krakauer’s “Into Thin Air” is the book under discussion at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. The book is an account of the deadliest season in the history of summit attempts on Mount Everest.

Multiple copies are available at the Sequim Library and can be requested online through the library catalog at www.nols.org.

Preregistration is not required; drop-ins are welcome.  

Olympic Hot Springs remembered

The Olympic Hot Springs returns to Port Angeles through a pictorial exhibit through February at The Museum at the Carnegie, 207 S. Lincoln St. “The Life of the Olympic Hot Springs” celebrates the resort and the pioneers who devoted their lives to its operation and management for almost 60 years.

An open house will be held at the Carnegie, from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10. Regular viewing hours are 1-4 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday. Call 452-2662 or e-mail artifact@olypen.com.

Free ‘Marvelous Movie Nights’ set

The Sequim Library hosts a free Saturday Marvelous Movie Night the first Saturday of each month, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11.  

The first film, “I AM” by Hollywood filmmaker Tom Shadyak, chronicles his recovery after brain injury and his travels to ask teachers and thinkers, “What’s wrong with the world? What can we do about it?”  

The film is family friendly.

Volunteers needed for fish counts

The North Olympic Salmon Coalition invites volunteers to help with Fyke Netting in Discovery Bay. Volunteers are needed to help set up the net and perform fish counts. Waders can be provided. Contact Jac at jentringer@nosc.org or call the NOSC office at 379-8051.

2012 Fyke Netting will be from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14; from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15; from 7 a.m.-noon Tuesday, March 13; and from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, March 14.

Blood drive set for Feb. 16

Knights of Columbus Council 8455 sponsors a blood drive with the Puget sound Blood Center from noon-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Parish Hall, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim. (The drive will be closed from 3:45-4:30 p.m.)

Donors must be in good health, age 18 and older.

Order now for native plant sale

Clallam Conservation District is accepting orders for its annual native plant sale.

Bare-root tree and shrub seedlings are sold in bundles of 10 (25 for some species) ranging in price from $15-$25 per bundle and include conifers, deciduous trees, shrubs, berry shrubs and evergreen shrubs.

Shelter Providers Network meets

Advocacy and Action is the featured topic at the Wednesday, Feb. 15, meeting of the Shelter Providers Network of Clallam County at 9 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church downstairs fellowship hall, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles.

Pam Tietz, executive director of Peninsula Housing Authority, presents information about legislation that impacts homelessness.

Shelter Providers meetings are open to everyone who is interested in ending homelessness in Clallam County.

Earth Heart Foundation and Clallam County Healthy Air Coalition sponsor a town hall meeting and presentation on biomass energy at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at the Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall, 73 Howe Road, Port Angeles.
