Art program wins excellence award
The art program of the Clallam County Family YMCA has received the Gibson Excellence Award for outstanding arts programming. This is the second such award for the YMCA in as many years. The program will receive a grant of $1,000 from the Gibson Foundation.
Getta Rogers, YMCA art and events director, attributes the art program’s success to finding balance with quality and value. The program enjoys local support with "A Taste of the Peninsula," a unique annual benefit featuring area chefs, food producers and wineries. The second annual event, sponsored by Westsound Bank, was held Nov. 1 and netted more than $14,000 for the program, up $2,000 from last year.

Call for artists
The Sequim Humanities and Arts Alliance is looking for artists to submit proposals for its 2009 "Art in Public Places" project. The resulting sculptures will be installed at the North Olympic Fuchsia Society Garden on Washington Street. Proposals from artists in Clallam and Jefferson counties are being considered for the creation and installation of these five sculptures. Projects that involve the collaboration of different artists are highly encouraged.
Artists will be paid a stipend for labor and materials and the resulting artwork will become the property and responsibility of the city of Sequim.
While the sculptures will be installed in a garden area, artists are not limited to flora and fauna themes. The goal is to enhance the natural beauty of the garden area. Sculptures should be freestanding but permanently installed in or on the ground. Each sculpture will be outdoors and should have a minimum 20-year life.
E-mail proposals to info@SequimArtsAlliance.org. Proposals should contain a completed application form, description and details for the proposed artwork (including a visual representation of the proposed artwork), statement of concept and an artist resume/biography. To get an application and a more detailed set of guidelines, go to SequimArtsAlliance.org. For additional questions, contact Jean Wyatt at 360-477-3750 or info@SequimArtsAlliance.org.
