North Kitsap Trails Connection
Linda Berry-Maraist, president of the North Kitsap Trails Connection (NKTA), will describe the land acquisitions now amounting to 5,000 acres, including the Sound to Olympics Trail route, at a public meeting of the Friends of the East Jefferson Trails Connections set for 9 a.m. Thursday, April 10, at Finnriver Farm & Cidery, 124 Center Rd. in Chimacum.
NKTA is a Peninsula Trails Coalition partner advocating for and supporting the Puget Sound to Pacific initiative, which facilitated the $16M federal RAISE planning grant with projects in Kitsap, Jefferson and Clallam counties to complete the STO and ODT sections of the Rails to Trails Conservancy’s Great American Rail Trail from Washington, D.C. to the Pacific Ocean at La Push.
The meeting is an opportunity to get better acquainted with neighbors as efforts are coordinated to build the trail connecting the STO with the Olympic Discovery Trail between Hood Canal and Discovery Bay.
Quimper Geological Society
The Quimper Geological Society welcomes geologist Dan Muhs from the U.S. Geological Survey for a Zoom presentation at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 12.
Muhs will speak on coastal tectonic uplift and will discuss a model related to convergent plate boundaries. This model has been used to explain variable rates of Quaternary uplift around the Pacific Rim. Muhs will show results of the model by using well-dated Late Quaternary marine terraces from around the Pacific Rim, including examples from South America, North America, the Aleutians, Japan, and the Marianas.
