Burn ban in effect
The Clallam County Burn Ban took effect yesterday, July 1, and runs through Oct. 1 unless conditions warrant an earlier closure. The burn ban applies to all outdoor burning except recreational cooking fires. Recreational fires are permitted unless further banned by extreme conditions and they must be limited to 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height.
OMC reschedules
The Board of Commissioners of Olympic Medical Center has cancelled its July 2 board meeting scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the board is 6 p.m. July 16, in Linkletter Hall at Olympic Memorial Hospital.
Commission meets
The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. July 2, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The agenda includes discussion of the Draft Clallam County Comprehensive Stormwater Management Plan. Call 417-2277.
Mac 101 meeting set
The Strait Macintosh User Group meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 Peabody St. It will be another in Jerry Freilich’s continuing series of talks for beginners. Freilich explains some very simple, basic, Macintosh task like placing photos into an e-mail and then the discussion follows as members ask questions.
Student nurses offer diabetes education
Peninsula College’s second-year nursing students will be volunteering their time this summer to offer diabetes education information and screening.
The students’ information table will be set up at different venues around the peninsula. The goals of their service project are to increase awareness of the diabetes risk factors, provide diabetes educational materials and promote local resources to peninsula communities.

The Dungeness River Audubon Society and the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society present a Protection Island Puffin Marine Sunset Dinner Cruise from 7-9 p.m. during Lavender Weekend, Friday-Saturday, July 18-19. It leaves from John Wayne Marina. Cost is $75 per person and includes a salmon dinner. The Glacier Spirit will circle Protection Island for passengers to see seabirds. Walkling Trust accepting grant applications
The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust is now accepting applications for grants to be awarded in 2015. The trust was created with more than $1 million from Myrtle Walkling before her death in 1992. The trust is used to fund charitable and civic projects that otherwise might not happen in Clallam County.
Applications available by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust, PO Box 1588, Port Angeles, WA 98362. Completed application forms must be submitted by Sept. 30.

Layton Hill Horse Camp hosts an Equine Trail Sports obstacle course and trail ride from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, with an optional private trail ride Sunday.
The camp is at 2514 Chicken Coop Road, Blyn.
Registration for obstacle course is $40 for adult competitors and $20 for student competitors or companion riders. Camping is by donation.

The North Olympic Library System’s Port Angeles Library hosts Pajama Math story times and science story times this summer.

Children and Youth entering grades K-6 this fall are invited to participate in a week of Vacation Bible School hosted by First Baptist Church of Sequim 9 a.m.-noon July 7-11. “AgencyD3” is a kid-style Investigative Academy where children will discover, decide and defend the claims of Jesus Christ through creative activities including music, craft, snack, games, Bible bessons and missions.
