PC community education sets youth summer camps

Peninsula College Community Education is offering a variety of summer camps for youths of ages 5-17 throughout July and August.

Explore the diverse landscape at Nature Camp, learn tabletop game Marvel Crisis Protocol in Game Camp, play Caribbean Steelpan styles and rhythms in Music Camp, practice theater and improv in Improv Olympics Camp, or create a film in Film Camp.

Sale set for library Friends group

The Friends of Sequim Library’s monthly sale is set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, at Rock Plaza, 10191 Old Olympic Highway.

Of interest this month are a large selection of cookbooks, books on Alaska, audio books, student textbooks/workbooks, and several collections by various authors.

Sherwood to host RC Aeronauts

The community is invited to “Soaring over Sherwood,” a pop-up museum event from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, at Sherwood Assisted Living, 550 W. Hendrickson Road.

The free, all-ages event features RC Aeronauts’s model airplanes and helicopters, as club members showcase their collection of remote-controlled (RC) aircraft along with models in various stages of construction. Pilots will tell the tales of RC flying. Free ice cream bars will be available.

“People often dream about flying from childhood, and this RC aircraft gives tremendous levels of excitement without risk of injury ” club president Terry Myers said. “You get the intangible reward that comes from learning to control an aircraft from takeoff to landing.”

The club has been a part of the Sequim community for over 25 years and fly at the Sequim Valley Airport.

Commissioners select county administrator

Clallam County commissioners have made a conditional employment offer to Todd Warren Mielke of Spokane to be the new county administrator.

The offer is conditional upon a background check, which is expected to take about two weeks.

Mielke was one of five candidates considered by the commissioners in a job search that began May 9. He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration finance and operations management and accounting plus a master’s degree in business administration.

Mielke has served in various positions in Spokane County, including CEO of the Greater Spokane Chamber of Commerce, three terms as county commissioner and his most recent position as the Chief Administrative Officer with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

While Mielke was a Spokane County Commissioner, he was elected president of the Washington Association of Counties.

Elections tests set

The Clallam County Elections Division will perform the county’s official logic and accuracy testing on the Accessible Voting Units (AVUs) at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 6, and the voting tabulation system test at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 7. Both tests will be held in the election center in room 072 at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Elections staff conduct the testing each year to ensure the AVUs and tabulation (hardware and software) functions properly and are accurately programmed for each election.

The testing is open to the public, with limited in-person observation space available. The test will also be broadcast via livestream at clallamcountywa.gov/elections.

Primary election ballots will be mailed to registered voters on Wednesday, July 12, with the primary election set for Aug. 1.

Free legal clinic slated

Clallam-Jefferson County Pro Bono Lawyers will offer a virtual legal aid clinic, a free program offering legal advice for members of the public, from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, July 15.

Consultations will be offered via telephone or Zoom.

Legal aid clinics are geared to help those who are financially unable to otherwise access a lawyer. Attorney volunteers to answer legal questions pertaining to civil matters, direct people to local services that might be able to assist them, and to explain the legal process to them.

County shuts down shellfishing on west end of Strait

Recreational shellfish harvesting is closed on the west Strait of Juan de Fuca, from Cape Flattery to Lyre River/Low Point, the Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services’ Environmental Health Division announced last week.

The eastern end of the Strait — Lyre River/Low Point to the Jefferson County line, including Dungeness Bay — closed recently as well (June 22).

Discovery Bay is closed to all species while Sequim Bay is closed to butter and varnish clams only.

Closed to all species means clams (including geoduck), oysters, mussels and other invertebrates such as the moon snail. All areas are closed for the sport harvest of scallops. The closures do not apply to shrimp.

‘Tea to Die For’ session set in July

Death Café “Tea to Die For,” sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, is set 4-5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 10, in Sequim and Wednesday, July 26, in Port Angeles.

The Sequim discussion will be held in the KSQM-FM Community Room, 609 W. Washington St., No. 17, while the Port Angeles talk will be held in the craft room upstairs at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

Tea, coffee and snacks will be served. The groups are free and open to all.

Conversations are held every second Monday in Sequim and every fourth Wednesday in Port Angeles. They are meant to foster relaxed and informal discussions surrounding death and dying and open to anyone curious or apprehensive about death. Call VHOCC at 360-452-1511.

Soul Speaker Series starts July 12

Beverly Tryk of People’s Memorial Association will present “Funeral Practices & Consumers’ Rights,” on Wednesday, July 12, from noon-1:30 p.m. on Zoom as a part of the ongoing Soul Care Speaker Series sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County (VHOCC).

Tryk will give an overview of various funeral practices and information about consumer rights in the funeral industry. People’s Memorial Association has been the thought-leader for funeral choice, education, and advocacy in Washington state for more than 80 years.

While preparing an end-of-life plan for a stint in the Peace Corps, Tryk discovered People’s Memorial Association. She has lived all over the world and is passionate about community health outreach.

All grange dessert auction set

The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, is hosting the third-annual All Grange Dessert Auction on Saturday, July 15, from 1 p.m. until all the desserts are gone.

The event that was created a few years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic to help raise money for the five struggling county granges. The public has a chance to bid on all different types of homemade desserts.

The public is welcome to donate their own homemade desserts. Bring dessert items to the grange on July 15, between 10 a.m.-noon. The bidding begins at 1 p.m..

Last year’s auction raised several thousands of dollars that was divided among the granges, but so much more is needed to help keep the bills paid, organizers say.
