County water testing lab holiday closures

The Clallam County water testing laboratory will be closed Nov. 10-11 for the Veterans Day holiday; Nov. 23-25 for the Thanksgiving Day holiday; Dec. 26 for the Christmas holiday; and Jan. 2, 2017, for the New Year holiday.

Water tests require a 24-hour period for results, so no water samples will be accepted the day before courthouse holiday closures.

Coffee chat set with school superintendent

A community coffee chat with Sequim school superintendent Gary Neal is set for 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Scooters Coffee, 649 W. Washington St. Community members are encouraged to meet the superintendent and take part in informal conversation on educational topics.

Learn about Habitat rehab program

Join Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County for a quick information session about how you can “Love Your Neighborhood” from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Elwha Klallam Heritage Training Center, 401 E. First St., Port Angeles.

Learn about Neighborhood Revitalization, how you can apply for minor repair/rehab work and how to become a Habitat volunteer.

Fall scavenger hunt set

Olympic Nature Experience will have its Fall Scavenger Hunt from 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, Sequim. Families are invited to connect to nature through group-led hikes and play along the Dungeness River, highlighting the county’s restoration work and amount of diversity to be found locally.

After exploring along the river, all guests will be invited back inside to enjoy local storytellers and tasty snacks. Cost is $15.

Community talk on tap

Donate toys for foster children at Sleep Train

To ensure that every foster child wakes up with a gift on Christmas morning, Sleep Train is hosting its annual Toy Drive for Foster Kids now through Dec. 18. To help, donate new, unwrapped gifts at any Sleep Train. Also enter Sleep Train’s annual photo contest. Snap a picture while donating and post it on Instagram with #SleepTrainSecretSanta in the caption or upload it to woobox.com. One grand prize winner will receive a holiday sleep essentials prize package, including an iPad mini. The Sequim Sleep Train store is at 1041 W. Washington St.

Work out, benefit local food bank

SportsFit, 1102 E. Washington St., Sequim, hosts a Thanksgiving Day workout from 9-10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 24. Admission is at least two non-perishable food items per person that will be donated to the Sequim Food Bank. DJ O.B.1 will be there to pump up the workout.

VFW hosts free Thanksgiving

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4760, 169 E. Washington St., Sequim, will have a free Thanksgiving dinner from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 24, for all veterans and active military service personnel.

OMC Auxiliary plans art sale fundraiser

The Olympic Medical Center Auxiliary will have its Charitable Art OMC Lobby Sales from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, Nov. 14-15, at the Olympic Medical Services Building, 840 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim; and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, Nov. 16-17, at Olympic Medical Center, 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles.

Half of the purchase price benefits OMC for the purchase of medical equipment, scholarships and local community projects. Sale items include handmade ceramic tiles, fused glass, jewelry, anodized aluminum, horseshoe nail art, painted scarves and cards. Shipley hosts holiday luncheon

The Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., Sequim, hosts a Thanksgiving luncheon, with two seatings set for 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17. Tickets are $12 for members and $15 for non-members, and are on sale through Nov. 10. The luncheon is catered by The Cafe at Shipley Center. Book sale set

The Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

The specials for this month include Northwest gardening, quilting, America’s Test Kitchen cookbooks, learning to play classical guitar, watercolor painting instruction, how to write and publish fiction and non-fiction, 200 DVDs and a large number of paperback fiction, especially science fiction. Also available is a 14-volume set of Louis L’Amour novels, bound in leatherette. Proceeds from the sale benefit children’s and adult programming at the Sequim Library.

Blood drive slated

The Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a blood drive in conjunction with The Bloodworks Northwest from 12:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 101 E. Maple St., Sequim. You must be in good health and 18 or older. The bloodmobile is closed from 4:15-5 p.m.

Woodturners group starts next week

A new group, Strait Turners Woodturners Group, based in Sequim, will meet from 9:30 a.m.-noon Thursday, Nov. 17. For location information, contact Ernie Kozun at 683-2560. The membership includes woodturners of all levels, from beginners to very experienced. It is a very friendly group of hobbyists who enjoy sharing their joy of turning. All are welcome.

Local bays closed to clam harvesting

The Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services, Environmental Health Division, announces new shellfish harvesting information.

In Clallam County, all beaches from Cape Flattery eastward to the county line have been opened to recreational shellfish harvesting for all species except Sequim Bay and Discovery Bay, which are closed to butter and varnish clams.

City collecting for Sequim Food Bank

The City of Sequim is accepting donations of non-perishable foods now through Friday, Dec. 16, for the Sequim Food Bank. Donations can be placed in the red barrel in the lobby of the Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St. The donations will be delivered to the Sequim Food Bank in time for holiday meals. Business hours for the City of Sequim are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. City offices will be closed on Friday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day and on Thursday-Friday, Nov. 24-25, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Windermere seeks food donations

Windermere Real Estate is helping to stock the Sequim Food Bank for the holiday season. Donate your non-perishable food donations at one of Windermere’s Sequim offices at 842 E. Washington St. or 137 Fairway Drive through the end of November. The most important food items for donation throughout the year are proteins like canned chicken, peanut butter, canned beans, dry beans, canned soup or chili. The food bank also accepts monetary donations because it can make your dollar stretch further.

Senior menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays-Fridays.

Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.
