Sequim Mujeres group plans fundraiser dinner

Mujeres de Maiz will have its 11th annual Día de Muertos Dinner and Silent Auction at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Sequim Masonic Hall, 700 S. Fifth Ave., Sequim. The auction has over 70 unique items, many hand-crafted from Mexico and other parts of the world. Local offerings also are featured. All proceeds go to scholarships, programs and projects of Mujeres de Maiz (Women of Corn) Opportunity Foundation.

Medicare drug class set

Bring your computer and learn to use Medicare’s Prescription Drug (Part D) website to enroll/review your prescription plan from 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St. Medicare open enrollment begins Oct. 15. This is a free presentation by SHIBA volunteers, sponsored by Jefferson/Clallam County Senior Information and Assistance and the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.

Shred event supports food bank

First Federal in Sequim and the Sequim Food Bank are partnering to offer a shred event and food drive on Saturday, Oct. 8. Bring your items to shred to the Sequim High School parking lot between 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and also make a donation to the Sequim Food Bank.

Caregivers learn about self-care

“Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” a class that helps those who care for a loved one also take care of themselves, will start Oct. 11 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The class will meet from 9-11:30 a.m. on six Tuesdays, ending Nov. 15. The only cost is $30 for the textbook.

Pre-registration is required and may be done by contacting Barbara Parse at 683-2113.

Join Scouts at open house

The Girl Scouts of Western Washington will have an open house to introduce girls to the Scouting program from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim.

Book sale is Saturday

The Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, behind the Sequim Library at 630 N. Sequim Ave. There is a collection of books about how to grow orchids plus a large collection of specifically Northwest gardening books. Also available are watercolor instruction books; 150 quilt making instruction and pattern books.

In addition there are large format vintage car and motorcycle books. For children and collectors there is a group of 31 vintage Little Golden Books. Specials also include 22 “For Dummies” books on a wide variety of subjects and 100 fiction and non-fiction books written in German.

Proceeds from the sale benefit children’s and adult programming at the Sequim Library.

Fire marshal lifts burn ban

The Clallam County burn ban was lifted on Oct. 1, however, Urban Growth Areas, including Port Angeles, Sequim, Carlsborg, Forks, Joyce, Clallam Bay and Sekiu, are restricted from outdoor burning, through Washington state law. Outside the UGA, contact your local fire district for burning regulations and permit requirements.

Owl-Oween Party in Gardiner

Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue presents the first Hairy Potter Owl-Oween Party at Wild Birds Unlimited, 275953 Highway 101, Gardiner, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. Rescuers will bring their non-releasable education birds of prey that have been rehabilitated through their efforts. DBWBR also will have some of the new birds of prey adopted from a facility that recently closed, including a white morph great horned owl named Gandalf. The public is invited come into the shop to get an up-close and personal look at these incredible educational birds. There will be a raffle to support the center and door prizes for the best Hairy Potter costumes throughout the day.

PUD serves up hot dogs, more

Celebrate Public Power Week with hot dogs and family fun at the Clallam PUD main office,104 Hooker Road, Carlsborg, from 11-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. Meet your commissioners as they grill up your hot dogs. For children, there will be a bucket truck, safety demonstrations, displays and activities — plus a photo op with a lineman cutout for those future linemen.

Beta Nu offers grants

The Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma announces that applications are now available for continuing education grants from the Helen Gariepy Grants for School Educators. Grants will be made available to selected educators who are working for professional improvement or development of their skills.

Mobile planetarium at school

Celebrate worldwide Astronomy Day by learning about the cosmos and visiting a mobile planetarium on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Sequim Middle School, 301 W. Hendrickson Road. Award-winning local science teacher John Gallagher will lead 30-minute “Introduction to the Night Sky” sessions between 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. inside the school cafeteria. Attendees are encouraged to register for a session in advance, however drop-ins are welcome at this free, all-ages event. League to host candidate forum

The Clallam County League of Women Voters will sponsor a forum from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the commissioners meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse. The first panel will feature candidates for U.S. Representative, Derek Kilmer and Todd A. Bloom. The second panel will be candidates for State Senator, Kevin Van De Wege and Danille Turissini.

Fair royalty sought

Clallam County Fair Royalty applications are now available at Clallam County high schools and online at www.clallamcountyfair.com. Deadline and orientation is Jan. 14, 2017. Applicants do not have to be 4-H or FFA members. Applications are open to high school students in grades 9-12 with a grade-point averages 2.6 or above. Royalty must attend the county fair, set for Aug. 17-20, 2017. Fair royalty also participate in local parades and community events as ambassadors. Call 681-2024 or email laurieanndavies@aol.com.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays-Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.

Thursday, Oct. 6: Tossed salad, cabbage roll, steamed rice, steamed carrots, blueberries w/cream

Friday, Oct. 7: Clam chowder, chicken Caesar salad, garlic bread, grapes, fruit parfait
