Rantz exhibit set for Friday unveiling at museum
The Museum & Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley opens a new exhibit featuring the late Joe Rantz, who is featured in Daniel James Brown’s best-selling book, “Boys in the Boat.” The exhibit opening is from 4-6 p.m. at the museum, 175 W. Cedar St. Family members of persons written about in “Boys in the Boat” will be on hand for the opening ceremonies, museum officials said.
Rantz, a Sequim resident for much of his childhood, was part of the University of Washington’s gold-medal-winning eight-man crew at the 1936 Olympic Games. He died Sept. 10, 2007.
Pioneers named for Irrfest
The Sequim Pioneer Association has announced the selection of the 2015 Grand and Honorary Pioneers for the 120th Sequim Irrigation Festival. Grand Pioneers are Art Rogers and Helen Bucher with Jeff Shold and Margie Russell-Lester as Honorary Pioneers.
They will be recognized at multiple events before and during the festival. Rogers and Bucher both were born in Sequim and are lifelong residents. Shold and Russell-Lester both have lived in Sequim for 40-plus years. The Irrigation Festival is May 1-10.
Guild shop open Saturday
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guilds Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. The shop is bursting with winter fashions for everyone, antiques, furniture, jewelry, kitchenware and all kinds of home accessories. Consignors and volunteers always are welcome.

Yelland to speak at NAMI meeting
Dr. Grace Yelland, pediatrician, will be the guest speaker at NAMI’S Affiliate meeting for the public at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Linkletter Hall in the basement of Olympic Medical Center, 939 Caroline St. in Port Angeles.
Yelland also is trained to practice adolescent medicine. She will talk about ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
A short NAMI affiliate meeting, which the public is welcomed to attend, will be at 6:30 p.m. Angel Lucas, the board of director’s new president, will preside at the meeting.

Workshop on bullying set
Prevention Works! invites the community to a Martin Luther King Day event, from 2-4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, in the Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles. Participants will discuss four specific factors that comprise bullying. All are welcome to this free event.

The Sequim City Planning Commission meeting for Jan. 20 at the Transit Center has been cancelled.
Tour of SARC on tap
The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center will be hosting a behind the scenes tour of its mechanical room, pump room, pool’s air handling unit and other areas of SARC at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22.
The tour will be led by maintenance manager Burt Cannon, where he also will answer maintenance questions about the facility. The tour group will meet in the main hallway and will be open to anyone in the public. No reservation is required.

Bulb planting event set
The Peninsula Trails Coalition will be honoring Martin Luther King Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 19, with a spring bulb planting at the Deer Park Overlook. The Home Depot has donated the flowers and the PTC is looking for volunteers from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Participants are welcome to participate for the whole period or just stop in for an hour or two.

Serenity House program director Kay Walters will report on preparations for the 12th Annual Point In Time count of homeless people, to be conducted Jan. 29.
