OPAS potluck tonight
The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society will meet at 6 p.m. today, Sept. 17, for a potluck dinner followed by the program at 7 p.m., at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, in Sequim. The program, “Enjoying Nature Through Photography,” will be presented by Hal Everett, a well-traveled, serious amateur wildlife and underwater photographer whose favorite subjects include swans, raptors and rare sea creatures. His images have won numerous awards. He also led several photographic workshops during the 2014 BirdFest. Bring a dish to share and your own place setting. The meeting is free and open to the public.
Planning group to talk marijuana growers
The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Sept. 17, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. Agenda items include a draft ordinance regarding Interim Zoning Controls for marijuana producers, processors and retailers, a request to amend Clallam County Code to merging Timber Land with Forest Land designation (eliminating the Timber Land classification) and an update on the Shoreline Master Program draft.

Strait ERN to meet
The next quarterly meeting of the Strait of Juan de Fuca Ecosystem Recovery Network (Strait ERN) will be from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s Red Cedar Hall located within their Community Center on Old Blyn Highway in Blyn. Agenda items include speakers on climate change and an brief overview of the recently funded project titled “Planning for Climate Change on the North Olympic Peninsula.

The Dungeness River Audubon Center is sponsoring a talk and question and answer session titled “Climate Change Action on the Olympic Peninsula” from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 20. The presentation will be at the Dungeness River Audubon Center in Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim.
Garden Club hosts fall sale
The Sequim Prairie Garden Club will hold a Fall Garden Sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 W. Washington St., Sequim. In addition to a large selection of perennials, shrubs and trees from their gardens there will be wonderful home-baked goods, fresh garden produce, along with garden art, books, and other gardening-related items. The proceeds are used to maintain and beautify the park. The clubhouse is available for rent.

Skill fair in P.A. set
The North Olympic Peninsula Library System’s Second Annual Skill Share Fair, a free community expo, will be at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., for learning and teaching practical, handy skills that help foster a more resilient and sustainable community. The fair is from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.
Norse genealogist featured speaker at meeting
The Clallam County Genealogical Society hosts Deanna Dowell, a renowned expert on Norse genealogy, at the group’s meeting from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 20, at the First Baptist Church, 105 W. Sixth St., Port Angeles. It was incorrectly listed as being at the Port Angeles Library.
Dowell presents “Slekhistorie: The Basics — Norway to America.” The meeting is free to the public. Attendees are asked to come 15-30 minutes early to be able to register, visit and have a cup of coffee.

Thrift shop open
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guilds Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. The shop is loaded with fall fashions for everyone including top brand jackets and cruise wear. Also featured will be jewelry, furniture, kitchenware, household items, linens and shoes. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price. Volunteers and consignors always are needed.

Jewelry sale at OMC
The Olympic Medical Center Auxiliary presents its second annual new and gently used jewelry and accessories sale from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at OMC, 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles, in the Season’s Cafe private dining room. For sale will be fine and costume jewelry, including designer purses, scarves and custom-made items. Credit cards will be accepted and proceeds benefit the auxiliary.

Speaker series/hospital guild meeting resumes
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild will resume its speakers series and hospital guild meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the community Hall of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave. in Sequim. This speaker series and guild meeting are open to the public and the guest speaker is always first on the program followed by a short recess before the guild business meeting. This month’s speaker will be Fire Chief Steve Vogel who will speak on the 100th anniversary of Fire District 3 being celebrated now. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.
Freethinkers to meet
The monthly meeting of the Juan De Fuca Freethinkers will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at The Paradise Restaurant, 703 N. Sequim Ave., in the large meeting room at the back of the restaurant.

Community dinner at Trinity
A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave. The meal includes meatballs, potatoes and gravy, vegetables, green salad, desserts and beverages.

Fair royalty candidates sought
The Clallam County Fair Royalty is seeking candidates for the 2015 Court. Applications are available at area high schools and on the web at the Clallam County Fair website under forms and applications at www.clallam.net/fair/forms.html. The fair royalty court is open to all public school, home-schooled and private school students grades 10-12 (ages 16-18) who have a GPA of 2.6 or better and who reside in Clallam County.
Applicants do not need to be involved in 4-H or FFA. The orientation meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, in the fairgrounds kitchen. Bring a parent/guardian, a completed application form, sponsor fee and a sealed copy of a high school transcript.

Shipley Center seeks drivers
The Shipley Center, a nonprofit senior activity center in Sequim, is seeking volunteers who would like to drive a 26-passenger bus to help seniors enjoy trips to various attractions, shows, parks and events around Western Washington.
The driver and a companion each receive free admission to the event or show and free lunch in appreciation. This requires a current CDL, Class A, B or C license, with passenger endorsement. The Shipley Center pays for the driver’s medical certification and license renewal. This is an ideal and fun opportunity for former transit or school bus drivers.
