Mosaic to discuss disabilities

In honor of Disabilities Awareness Month, Mosaic of Clallam County will give a presentation on developmental disabilities at Peninsula College on Thursday, Oct. 9. The free program, which is part of the college’s Studium Generale lecture and performance series, will begin at 12:35 p.m. in the Little Theater.

Presenters will be Mosaic Executive Director Priya Jayadev, program coordinator Tresa Stuber and Clallam Mosaic participants. They will talk about developmental disabilities (DD) and Mosaic’s programs, which serve to enrich, encourage and empower Clallam County families and caregivers living with DD.

Inn marks centennial with open house

NatureBridge in Olympic National Park is hosting an open house from 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in celebration of the centennial of the historical Rosemary Inn.

It became part of Olympic National Park in 1944 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The public is welcome.

Check out Five Acre’s ‘Kids Market’

The Five Acre School Parent Service Organization announces its annual Kids Market, set for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the school, 515 Lotzgesell Roadd, Sequim.

Children’s toys, clothes, gear, books and costumes will be for sale. Parents, friends and community members may rent a table for $10 and sell items.

Candidate forum scheduled for Oct. 14

FourCs is hosting a candidate forum from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, featuring Bill Peach and Missy Bruch, candidates for Clallam County commissioner.

Marty McClendon, candidate for the 6th Congressional District also will be present.

Additional candidates have been invited to attend so that you will have an opportunity to meet them.

The forum is at the Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., Sequim.

 

Book sale is Saturday

Friends of the Sequim Library will have its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.

All indoor paperback fiction will be half-price. Other subjects of special interest will be homeschooling/childhood education, Christmas books, DVDs and CDs.


Coffeehouse to meet

The Sequim Deaf Coffeehouse will meet from noon-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in Geneva Hall, Sequim Community Church, 960 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Shelter Providers Network to meet Oct. 15

The Shelter Providers Network of Clallam County meets 9-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church’s downstairs fellowship hall, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles.

Peter Casey will give a progress report on Peninsula Behavioral Health’s Respite Center. Specialty Services has also been invited to report on their chemical dependency treatment center, which opened recently in Port Angeles.

The agenda also includes reports on housing, services, events, funding and public policy issues affecting homelessness and affordable housing.

Audubon on tap

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society meets at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road. It is a joint meeting with the Friends of the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, a non profit group that supports the operation on the DNWR.

Sue Thomas, Wildlife Biologist for the Washington Maritime National Wildlife Refuge Complex, presents, “Wildlife Response to Unmanned Aircraft Systems during Monitoring,” examining the consequences to wildlife of using unmanned aircraft (or drones).

The meeting is free and open to the public.

Composting classes set

The Sierra Club is giving two presentations on what you should know about composting.

The presentation, “Know Your Compost,” will be given from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Sequim Library and from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in the Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library.

A film will be shown covering the making of many composts, what they consist of how these are marketed and farmers’ experiences with them. Handouts will be available and there will be plenty of discussion time, including what information citizens would like to see on compost labels and how to get transparent labeling.

Holiday events set at Troll Haven

Troll Haven, at 950 Gardiner Beach Road in Sequim, hosts a pumpkin patch for youths and adults alike each weekend in October through Oct. 31.

The Troll Haven Haunted Castle is open 4-9 p.m., Oct. 17-19 and Oct. 31-Nov. 2 and is open to families.

Fall apple festival set

New Life Open Bible Church, 402 E. Sixth St., Port Angeles invites the community to come experience its free Annual Apple Press & Fun Fest from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18.

There will be an old-fashioned apple press, games, new bounce house, face painting, hot dogs and other goodies. Apple donations greatly appreciated.

Queen of Angels school fundraiser is on

The Queen of Angels School’s 2014-2015 Partners in Excellence Fund Drive is now underway. The school raises funds through donations to provide a Catholic education to students.

Past fund drives have paid for various improvements to the school, contributed to the school’s endowment fund, supported general operations and provided tuition assistance to families.

PEO to host bunco fundraiser

Chapter IV PEO (Philanthropic Education Organization) will host a bunco and silent auction fundraiser at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles, at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Desserts and beverages will be served and prizes will be awarded. There is a $10 donation to participate.

Proceeds from the event benefit women’s educational scholarships. PEO is an international philanthropic education organization for women.
