League hosts 3 forums
The League of Women Voters has three more forums scheduled before the primary:
• County Commissioner, District 3, in Forks from 6-8 p.m. today,
July 9, at Concerned Citizens (across from Thriftway)
• U.S. Representative at the Port Angeles Senior Center from 6-8 p.m. July 10
• County Commissioner, District 3, at Port Angeles Senior Center from 6-8 p.m. July 16
Candidates for the Charter Review Commission have been invited to stand and introduce themselves and there will be time to meet and greet the candidates personally at the close of each forum.
Forums and debates are being planned in Sequim and Port Angeles for the general election and will be announced in August after the primary election.
River team to meet
The Dungeness River Management Team will meet from 2-5 p.m. today, July 9, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 Hendrickson Road, Sequim.
Group meets about oil
Olympic Climate Action is sponsoring “Oil and Our Marine Waters,” an evening of education and an invitation to action regarding the burgeoning transport of oil in local marine waters, at 7 p.m. Friday, July 11, in the Port Angeles City Council chambers, 321 E. Fifth St.
Clallam County Commissioner Mike Doherty will speak about proposed increases in oil tanker traffic and the associated risks to our communities and resources, and what our community can do to minimize these risks. OCA will screen the film “The Big Fix,” a 2012 documentary exploring the worst oil spill in U.S. history — the BP Deepwater Horizon — its causes, consequences and cover-ups.
Buddha seminar set
Friday-Saturday, July 11-12, Joanne Kumekawa will offer a weekend retreat on “Finding True Happiness: the Fundamentals of Buddhism” at the Sequim Public Library from 6:30-8 p.m. both days. Buddha taught that everybody wants to be happy; no one wants to suffer. In the retreat, Kumekawa explores meditation, why people experience what they experience according to the Buddhist system of cause and effect, and how they can change their thinking to have a happier life.
Book sale this Saturday
Friends of the Sequim Library will have its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 12, behind the library at 630 N. Sequim Ave. Of interest are woodworking, railroading and juvenile books about horses.
Annual flea market on tap
The Dominion Terrace’s Resident’s Council has a flea market planned from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, in the clubhouse.
Take a walk
Join the Olympic Peninsula Explorers for a scenic walk up Hurricane Hill on Saturday, July 12. The 5k (3.1-mile) or 10k (6.2-mile) walk starts at 9 a.m. The 10k walk may include a view of Victoria, B.C., depending on weather.
The walk is free though participants need a National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands pass.
There is a restroom at the parking area as well as at the start point. No pets are allowed. Carpooling is an option from the start point at William Shore Memorial Pool, 225 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles. A picnic lunch is set following the walk.

Shelter holds open house
Center Valley Animal Rescue, 11900 Center Road, Quilcene, is having a summer open house from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 12. There will be raffles for gift certificates, homemade pies and cakes, restaurant gift certificates and more.
Sundaes at the Grange
The Sequim Prairie Grange will have an ice cream social from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, July 13. The cost is $5 for a banana split or a sundae. Proceeds will go to benefit the Sequim FFA Community Park at Sinclair Place. The Grange hall is at 290 Macleay Road. For more information, contact Marie at 683-4599.
Feiro board meets
The annual meeting of the Feiro Marine Life Center, a nonprofit, will be at the Feiro Marine Life Center, 315 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles, at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, July 17. This meeting is free and open to the public. Agenda items include a synopsis of 2013 and a regular business meeting of the board of directors, along with a question and answer period and a tour of the Marine Life Center with light refreshments served.
Psychiatric presentation
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Clallam County is offering a presentation to the public at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at Olympic Medical Center,, Linkletter Training Room (Basement).
Dr. Joshua Jones, medical director of Peninsula Behavioral Health, will speak on “New Advances in Psychiatric Diagnosis and Treatment.”

Air study discussion set
The Olympic Region Clean Air Agency’s Senior Air Monitoring Specialist, Dr. Odelle Hadley, will present the final results and analysis from the Clallam County Air Quality Saturation Study at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 13, in the Carver Room at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.
