Library book sale Saturday; City of Sequim imposes burning ban; ice cream social at Grange; SARC hosting tours, more

Library book sale Saturday

Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 11. Special collections are art, travel writing, self-help, music CDs and DVD movies. The sale site is behind the Sequim Library at 630 N. Sequim Ave. Parking is available.

All funds raised provide the library with the ability to run programs for both children and adults, including the Summer Reading Program.


City imposes burning ban

Effective immediately, the City of Sequim bans all recreational fires within the city limits.

The upgrade declaration comes in conjunction with other cities, counties and area fire district bans. The ban prohibits all outdoor burning which includes recreational fires (propane and gas appliances are allowed.)

The city ban follows as the Clallam County fire marshal also has declared recreational fires banned.


Cherry abundance? Call the Clallam County gleaners

Do you have a tree or garden turning out more produce than you can handle? Share your bumper crops with others who could benefit from fresh, local food. WSU Clallam County Gleaners are ready to pick your unwanted harvest and redistribute it to food banks and programs.

SARC hosting tours

The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center announces it will host two free tours of its mechanical and maintenance areas. The event will start from the entry desk at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 9, or 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 14. The free tour of SARC’s mechanical and pool areas, including the pool’s air handling unit, will take approximately one hour. Anyone is welcome to come view this free event. Each tour is limited to the first 15 registrants.

SARC maintenance manager Burt Cannon will lead the tour and answer any maintenance questions. Make a reservation at 683-3344.


Ice cream social at Grange

The Sequim Prairie Grange will have an ice cream social from 5-7 p.m. Sunday July 12. The cost is $5 for a banana split or a sundae. Proceeds will go to benefit Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County. The Grange Hall is at 290 Macleay Road, Sequim.


Feline benefit at winery

A benefit, “Feline Fine at Harbinger Wine,” for Peninsula Friends of Animals will be hosted by Harbinger Winery, 2358 W. Highway 101, Port Angeles, from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, July 11. Admission is by donation.

Enjoy samplings of Mt. Townsend Creamery artisan cheeses and fudge by WeDo Fudge. Entertainment is by PufnStuff. There will be a Kit Kat Room Boutique and raffle. Wine, beer and Bedford sodas will be available for purchase.

A percentage of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to PFOA, including a special bottling of “Meowrlot.”

 

Sequim Lavender Weekend training scheduled

The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce is hosting a training session for volunteers and any members of the public that are interested in learning about what’s new for this year’s Sequim Lavender Weekend. The training session will be at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at the City of Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.

The session will include information about the farms on tour, transportation options, fee structures, the street fair and community events.

ONP receives grant for youth

Olympic National Park is one of 37 national parks selected to receive a 2015 Active Trails grant from the National Park Foundation. With this grant, ONP will offer a series of weekly adventures for boys and girls attending summer programs at the Carroll C. Kendall and Mount Angeles units of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula.

The grant award totaled nearly $17,500 and was distributed among project partners Olympic National Park, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula and NatureBridge.


Checkpoints group to meet

The next Stop The Checkpoints meeting will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 13, in the Port Angeles Library – Carver Room, 2210 S. Peabody St. The main topic will be “Save The Olympic Peninsula — an update on stopping the U.S. Navy’s proposals for electronic warfare training.”

There also will be a report on the recent farmworker walkouts in Skagit County. The meeting is open to the public.


Sea Hawkers host barbecue

The Dungeness Bay Sea Hawkers are inviting Seattle Seahawks fans to join them in a family-friendly event from 3-10 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road.

A barbecue ($3.50) includes hotdogs, chips and soda or water. The event features games like three-legged races, sack races, water balloon tosses and more, plus drawing and give-aways, music and entertainment, a youth-friendly film and appearance from former Seahawk linebacker Hillary Butler.

The Sea Hawkers also will host a membership drive ($15 per individual, $25 for family of four).

Nature Experience group sets annual meeting

The Olympic Nature Experience’s annual meeting is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. The group is “committed to connecting children, families and our community with nature, through immersive nature experiences.”

Drought forum in JeffCo

A group of state and local agencies will host a community drought forum to provide answers for Jefferson County residents from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at the Chimacum High School  auditorium, 91 West Valley Road, Chimacum.

At the forum, staff from the Department of Ecology will join local leaders from the North Olympic Development Council, WSU Extension, Jefferson County, City of Port Townsend and more, discussing drought impacts.


Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave.

Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
