Shelter Providers Network meets today
Fair Housing Month will be celebrated today at the meeting of the Shelter Providers Network of Clallam County, which convenes at 9 a.m. in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church’s downstairs fellowship hall, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles.
The agenda also includes reports on events, services, housing and funding affecting homelessness and affordable housing.

Representatives stage phone town hall
Reps. Kevin Van De Wege and Steve Tharinger invite the public to join them for their 2014 Legislative Telephone Town Hall from 6:15-7:15 p.m. today, April 16. Westcott earns honor, award
Sequim mayor Candace Pratt and the City of Sequim presented the first “Westcott Award” to Emily Westcott for her exemplary volunteer service to the city and the community. The award was presented at the city’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner held at the Guy Cole Center on Wednesday, April 9.
Westcott often refers to herself as the “queen of the weed patrol,” recruiting volunteers and taking it upon herself to make sure the city looks its best. She works with the Sequim High School horticulture program to produce flower baskets that adorn the city throughout the summer and obtains sponsorships for the baskets to cover the cost. Along with a host of volunteers, Westcott decorates downtown for the holiday season making the city sparkle.
She has served on boards of the Museum and Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, Olympic Theatre Arts, the Red Cross and the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce. “Emily works so hard and commits a great deal of her time to making Sequim beautiful, we wanted to recognize her in a special way by creating this award in her honor and making her the first recipient,” said City Clerk Karen Kuznek-Reese who manages the city’s volunteer program.
The Westcott Award will be presented annually to a city volunteer in recognition of exemplary service.
Meeting cancelled
The Clallam County Planning Commission meeting scheduled for today, April 16, is cancelled. The commission will reconvene May 7. Call 417-2277.
Author presents slideshow
Author Kathleen Kaska gives a slide presentation at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, about the work of Audubon ornithologist Robert Porter Allen, outlining his work on behalf of the whooping crane. The presentation is dubbed, “The Man Who Saved the Whooping Crane: The Robert Porter Allen Story.”
The program is free and open to the public. The Dungeness River Audubon Center is at 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim.
Clinic needs medical volunteer
The Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic is in special need of individuals with medical training who would be able to fill the role of assessment volunteer. Monthly Trinity dinner set
A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave. The meal includes meatballs, mashed potatoes, gravy, coleslaw, desserts and beverages. Meet the Easter bunny
On Saturday, April 19, First Teacher is sponsoring a breakfast at Applebee’s. For the little ones attending the breakfast, the Easter bunny and the Applebee’s Bee will be available. The cost for the breakfast is $10 for parents and free for their child. One free child for each parent. If more children are coming, it will be $5 for the extra children. Tickets are available at Dungeness Kids’ Company or Windermere Real Estate. Or, call 681-2250 and reserve a ticket to be picked up outside of Applebee’s on that morning.
Benefit dinner at grange
Fairview Grange is having a Spaghetti & Meatballs Dinner & Chinese – Dessert Auction at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 22. The auction starts at about 6 p.m. All the homemade spaghetti and meatballs, salad, and French bread and ice cream you want for $10. Children under 12 free. New items or desserts are appreciated for the auction. Proceeds benefit Fairview Grange, 161 Lake Farm Road in Port Angeles. Call 461-9008.
Pratt to speak at guild
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guilds Speaker Series and business meeting will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the fellowship hall of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 Fifth Ave. The guest speaker will be Candace Pratt, Sequim’s new mayor. Tickets for the Guild’s annual luncheon/fashion show/silent auction on May 29 also will go on sale at this meeting. For more information, call 683-7044.
Libraries to close for a day
All libraries in the North Olympic Library System will be closed on Friday, April 25, to allow staff to attend an in-service training day. The Port Angeles Library, Sequim, Forks and Clallam Bay branches reopen at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26. The library’s website is open 24/7 at www.nols.org.
Food for Thought continues
On Tuesday, April 22, at 6 p.m., the Sequim Library will present the next in its Food for Thought series. Christie Johnston, of Johnston Farms, will discuss how to “Grow What You Like to Eat!” This event is free and pre-registration is not required. The library is at 630 N. Sequim Ave.
Dante featured
“Masonic Virtues in Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’” is the next lecture slated at Sequim’s Masonic Lodge, 700 S. Fifth Ave. from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22. It is the second of a six-part monthly series entitled “The Rich Tapestry of Freemasonry” held on the fourth Tuesday of the month to celebrate the lodge’s upcoming 100th anniversary. Give pet food, see royalty
The 2014 Clallam County Fair Royalty Court will be holding a pet food drive at Petco in Sequim from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday April 19. Queen Mia and Princess Hannah will be collecting pet food and products to be donated to the Olympic Peninsula Human Society, Peninsula Friends of Animals and WAG.
All financial donations will be donated to the Oso Slide Relief Fund to help feed and care for the surviving animals and/or the canines assisting in the recovery effort.
The royals also will be available for free photos.
