Give blood at Trinity United; grange offers spaghetti dinner; learn about soil testing; library book sale set, more

Give blood at Trinity

Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim, will host a blood drive from noon-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. Make an appointment at 800-398-7888. Walk-ins also are welcome. The drive is closed from 3:45-4:30 p.m. A photo ID is required to donate.

 

Grange offers spaghetti

The Sequim Prairie Grange will host a spaghetti dinner from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12. The $10 cost includes spaghetti, green salad, garlic bread, ice cream and cookies. Proceeds will benefit the grange’s many projects. The Sequim Prairie Grange is at 290 Macleay Road.

Meghan Adamire, Clallam County Soil Conservation District conservation planner, will discuss soil testing for home gardeners from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the county commissioners meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Adamire’s presentation will cover the soil nutrients that are key to successful plant growth, how to take a soil test to determine if the soil lacks nutrients and how to amend soil using the results of a soil test.

The Green Thumb Garden Tips brown bag series, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second and fourth Thursday of every month in Port Angeles, consists of educational programs designed to help home gardeners establish or improve their gardening practices.

Attendees may bring a lunch. The presentations are free and open to the public. However, donations to help offset copying costs for handouts are accepted. For questions, call 565-2679.


DEAFOP to do lunch

Deaf Events and Friends Olympic Peninsula aka DEAFOP will meet at Fanaticus Sports Bar and Grill, 1026 E. First St., in Port Angeles, for a “Sweetheart Luncheon” Saturday, Feb. 13, starting at 1 p.m.

Video games abound at library book sale

The Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

This month there is a selection of video games by XBOX, PS2 and XBOX-One. There also are many jigsaw puzzles, knitting books with patterns and instructions. Gardening and landscape planning books specific to the Northwest and also a nice selection of current fiction published in the past 12 months is available.

Proceeds from the sale are used to fund children’s and adult programs at the Sequim Library.


OPAS shutterbugs to share photos

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road in Sequim. Dow Lambert will host the annual OPAS Photo Night. Members and non-members will have submitted their bird photos to be shared and appreciated by fellow bird lovers.

The photographers will say a few words about each photo to include the identity, location, time of year plus any unique behaviors. This is not a contest and the photos will not be judged or critiqued.

The program is free and open to the public.


JeffCo gardener class has openings

WSU Jefferson County has five openings in its upcoming Master Gardener Program. Trainees will be using an online course provided by WSU, which they do mostly on their own time. WSU will supplement this training with classroom time, field trips and various group activities.

Classes will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 18-May 5, at the Tri-Area Community Center in Chimacum. The cost for the Master Gardener Training Course is $250, of which $70 goes to WSU for the online training course.

Learn about mason bees

The Gardiner Wild Birds Unlimited store invites the public to one of two presentations on the orchard mason bee.

The first class will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, and the second class will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27. Christie Lassen will be giving an hourlong, family friendly, talk on the benefits of the mason bee and how to attract them and keep them in your garden. Call 360-797-7100 to reserve a place as seating is limited.

A contribution of $5 to its Community Education Fund holds a seat for you at this presentation and proceeds from the talk will go to the NWRC & Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue.

Permaculture workshop set for Saturday

Michael Pilarski will present a one-day permaculture workshop from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, in the Elwha Klallam Heritage Center, 401 E. First St., Port Angeles. Workshop fee: $50 suggested donation but no one turned away.

Coffee with mayor

The City of Sequim “Coffee with the Mayor” program continues in February.

Sequim residents can meet informally with new Sequim mayor Dennis Smith at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at Adagio Bean & Leaf, 981 E. Washington St. The mayor will be at a different published location each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community.

Rep. Kilmer announces town hall in Sequim

In order to hear directly from residents of Washington’s 6th Congressional District, Rep. Derek Kilmer has announced that he will be holding a town hall from 5-6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 18, at the City Council Chambers, Sequim City Hall, 152 W. Cedar St., Sequim.

Town halls are open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. Participants will have the opportunity to hear an update on Congress and ask questions.


Marine resources group meets

The Clallam County Marine Resources Committee meets Monday, Feb. 22, in Port Angeles from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Clallam County Courthouse, in the commissioners’ small meeting room.  Enter the meeting room through the east door, north of the bus shelter on Fourth St.

Documentary on Navy’s plans slated

Seattle-based filmmaker Mitch Mattrow will show his 10-minute, action-oriented documentary “By Air, Land & Sea: The Navy’s plans for redefining our future” after learning of the Navy’s plans for the Olympic Peninsula.

The film will be shown from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. Local residents who appear in the film will be on hand for the discussion to follow.

 

County Republicans to caucus on Feb. 20

The Clallam County Republican Party hosts three simultaneous pooled caucuses on Saturday, Feb. 20, beginning at 10 a.m. Doors open at 9 a.m. for registration and doors close an hour later for the official start. Caucuses are to end by 1 p.m.

Caucuses for Sequim area precincts are at the Sequim High School cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave. Caucuses for Port Angeles area precincts will be at the Port Angeles High School cafeteria, 304 E. Park Ave. A third caucus is in Forks.

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491.
