Feiro marks 35 years with open house in PA

The Feiro Marine Life Center, 315 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles, will celebrate its 35th year from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, during Concerts on the Pier with an open house.

The center will have free admission and activities, underwater robotics demonstrations, a booth from partner Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, cake and an ocean-themed youth costume contest, with prizes donated by H2O Waterfront Bistro.

The bistro also will have Narrows Brewing Giant Pacific Octopus IPA on special tap as part of the celebration. Black Diamond Junction will be the featured band on this evening, playing a selection of classic hits.

OPEN sets open house

The Sequim Lavender Weekend is a great time to come see the horses that the Olympic Peninsula Equine Network has available for adoption. OPEN hosts an open house from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at 251 Roupe Road, Sequim.

There will be lots of horse tack for sale as well as Western and horse decorating items. Local author Lisa Preston will be on site with her latest book, “The Ultimate Guide to Horse Feed, Supplements and Nutrition.” From U.S. Highway 101 in Sequim, to Hooker Road to Roupe Road.


Hospital Guild thrift shop open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 16. Loads of summer clothing for everyone will be featured along with designer handbags, fine jewelry, kitchen dishware, appliances and furniture.

Also included are books, puzzles, shoes and fine glassware. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price. Volunteers and consigners always are needed. Call 683-7044 for more information.


Learn composting tips

WSU Extension will have a composting workshop from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the Fifth Street Community Garden in Port Angeles. Learn multiple strategies to turn your vegetable scraps, fruit peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, fallen leaves and yard trimmings into free, nutrient rich compost for your garden and house plants.

New in town?

If you are new to Sequim or considering relocating to Sequim, the New in Town Conversation gathering has been designed for you. The events are from 2:30-4:30 p.m. each third Wednesday every other month at First Federal, 333 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.

The next one is July 20 with guest speaker Jodi Minker, assistant administrator with the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce. She will review with attendees volunteer opportunities at the chamber.

Join mayor for coffee

The City of Sequim Coffee with the Mayor program continues in July. Sequim residents can meet informally with Mayor Dennis Smith at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, July 21, at the Bell Creek Bar & Grill, 707 E. Washington St.

Communications and Marketing Director Barbara Hanna will join the mayor for the July meeting.

The mayor will be the Bell Creek Bar & Grill each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community. Contact Dennis Smith at dsmith@sequimwa.gov with questions.


Shelter Providers to meet July 20

The real face of homelessness in Clallam County will be the focus of the Wednesday, July 20, meeting of the Shelter Providers Network, which is from 10-11:30 a.m. in Room 160 of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

In addition to data on where homeless people come from, Mary Benavidez of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Clallam County chapter, will speak on mental illness and homelessness. The Network also will review actions to expand affordable housing and services.

Citizens selects board members for ’16-’17

The Citizens for Sequim Schools, a grassroots organization that supports local school election issues, selected its board of directors for 2016-2017 on June 29. They include incumbents Brandino Gibson, Candi Hayden, Jodi Minker, Jason Morgan, Robert Streett and Shenna Younger.

New to the board are Sequim School Board directors Mike Howe and Heather Short, plus Brian Garret, Brian Kuh, Mike McAleer and Michelle Rhodes. Outgoing board members are Nate Atkisson, Kevin James, Kammah Morgan and Colleen Robinson.

Donate school supplies

Sleep Train is hosting its annual School Supply Drive, offering an easy way to give back to local foster children to adjust to the upcoming school year.

Now through Sept. 4, donate new school supplies at the Sleep Train store at 1041 W. Washington St., Sequim. The most requested items include backpacks, 3-ring binders, notebooks, flash drives and packs of pens and pencils.

Walkling fund now accepting applications

The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust is accepting applications for grants to be awarded in 2017. The trust awards grants to encourage new civic and charitable projects to benefit citizens of Port Angeles and Clallam County. For applications, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust, PO Box 1588, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Submit completed applications by Sept. 30.

Myrtle Walkling, who died in 1992, created the trust in her will and funded it with more than $1 million.


Veterans Stand Down set in Port Townsend

A Voices For Veterans Stand Down will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, July 25, at the Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St., Port Townsend .

It is open to all veterans but especially homeless veterans, veterans in need and immediate dependent family members.

There will be available a hot breakfast and lunch, employment services, benefits counseling, housing assistance, legal aid, medical and dental health screening, haircuts, clothing, bedding, hygiene kits and outdoor equipment.

Senior menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.

Friday, July 15: Waldorf salad, baked ham, whipped potatoes, Brussels sprouts, carrot cake
