Sales tax to rise; OPAS hears from biologist; PC offers extended hours for registration, advising, more; county planners to discuss Carlsborg UGA

Sales tax to rise

Consumers in Clallam County, Centralia, Clarkston, Enumclaw, Pacific County, Shelton, portions of Snohomish County within the Public Transportation Benefit Area and Tacoma see their sales tax rate increase on purchases starting Friday, April 1.

Consumers in unincorporated Clallam County will now pay an 8.4 percent sales tax. That’s an increase of two-tenths of 1 percent, which the county will be able to use for general fund purposes.


OPAS hears from biologist

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim. Join Hilton Turnbull, habitat biologist for the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s Natural Resources Department, to learn about the tribe’s conservation efforts to protect and restore tribal resources in the Dungeness area. The program is free and open to the public.

PC offers extended hours for registration, advising, more

Peninsula College is offering extended hours for testing, advising, registration, campus tours, tuition payments and financial aid information in March.

Pirate Central, located in the Clocktower Building on PC’s main campus, will be open from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, March 19. Testing must be started by 10 a.m.

County planners to discuss Carlsborg UGA

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The agenda includes an amendment to the Critical Area Ordinance addressing ongoing agricultural exemptions, and a recommended zone map, development regulations and comprehensive plan policies discussions regarding the Carlsborg Urban Growth Area. Call 417-2277 for more information.


Coffee with mayor

The City of Sequim’s Coffee with the Mayor program continues in March.

Sequim residents may meet informally with Mayor Dennis Smith at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 17, at Hi-way 101 Diner, 392 W. Washington St. Smith will be at a different location each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community. Recognize transit drivers

The Clallam Transit System governing board has proclaimed March 18 as Transit Driver Appreciation Day in Clallam County. This proclamation was made to tell the local public transit drivers that they make a difference every day to the people who they serve, to demonstrate the general public’s gratitude for the great service that the Clallam Transit System’s transit drivers provide and to celebrate the contributions of these drivers.


Vintage pottery at thrift shop

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guilds thrift shop, 204 W. Bell St., will be open from  11 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, March 19. The final pieces of the vintage Hall pottery collection will be featured along with furniture, new spring fashions, jewelry, handbags and accessories. Grange hosts Irish meal

Fairview Grange, 161 Lake Farm Road in Port Angeles, is holding a corned beef and cabbage dinner at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 22. Cost is $10 per person and children younger than 12 eat for free. The meal includes ice cream cake, punch and coffee. The event also includes music and fun for all the family. A portion of the proceeds goes to the grange’s scholarship fund.

Guild hosts DVHWC leader

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s speaker series and business meeting will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 22 in the community hall of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave. in Sequim.

Rose Gibbs, RN and clinic director for the Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic, will address what the clinic provides and how the clinic is assessing the health care needs of uninsured community members. The public always is welcome to this portion of the meeting followed by a short recess before the guild’s business meeting. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. Free parenting education classes set at First Step

First Step is offering a free parent education series, set for 1-3 p.m. on Thursdays, April 7-June 16, at the First Step Family Support Center, 323 E. Sixth St., Port Angeles. The series includes lunch and childcare.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.

Friday, March 18: Carrot salad, beef Stroganoff, whipped potatoes, broccoli, pears

Tuesday, March 22: Potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, barbecued chicken, orange slices, sherbet

Wednesday, March 23: Green salad, chicken fried steak, whipped potatoes w/gravy, green peas, citrus sections.
